Dexamethasone

Who’da thought? Good old dexa may be one of the first effective treatments for those seriously affected by COVID-19. I was one of those who jettisoned the steroids after some obligatory dosing with A/C, as I had no nausea and dexamethasone with Taxol wrecked my carefully honed anti-constipation regime! Delighted to know it may also be useful in the fight against the virus. Possibly the only good thing about a pandemic is we will make all sorts of medical discoveries.
  • I saw that!!  Hubby was given that during his chemo as well!  They said it may help up to 30% of Covid sufferers to recover!
  • Fantastic that we don’t have to wait for a useful drug to be created, tested etc. for really sick people, it is at least something that gives more hope. It sounds like after review of the study and approval it can be used straightaway.

Certainly helped me on EC! Only issue was at 2 am I was the only one in the house ready to party!

    big hugs Tinks xx

  • @Tinks - I think there was a band back in the 70's - 'Dexy and the Midnight Runners' LOL
  • Yes apparently it saves lives for all sorts of things. All it did for me was give me osteoporosis and an extra 20kg!
  • Haha I laughed when I saw that! That stuff gave me the jitters and stole my sleep when I was on it for AC
  • Dexamethasone was my wonder drug while on chemo. It may me feel like super woman the day before, the day of and the day after my chemo treatment. Felt like I could run the olympics on this stuff. No wonder it makes covid-19 patients feel better. Didn't like the weight gain though.
  • omg - “Dexy” and I so enjoyed our 20+ hours of being wide awake! We played music, wrote letters, ignored the housework, did baking in the early hours, listened to the husband snore while reading!  Now.... I’m going thru insomnia with my Lupus! Just what I don’t need.
  • Is there anything that Dexy can't do?  I've got a bad ear infection and have been prescribed eardrops with...wait for it...Dexamethasone!
  • Dexamethasone is a steroid and commonly used for inflammatory chest infections, brain swellings with tumors or after trauma. It's newer off label use is with chemo, I guess as it's a poison and our bodies inflammatory  response to it is what gives us the issues. I had a reaction to taxol and had to have huge doses prior to chemo so I didn't stop breathing.
So dex as well as prednisolone (also used similarly) would be expected treatment. It certainly doesn't cure it. Hopefully wonder drug just round the corner. Or an effective vaccine.
