Clinical Trials and options for stage 4 Triple Negative

Seems to be very few Triple Negative on the BCNA - wondering if anyone has any pointers for treatments/trials/options for triple negative -  my cancer is back - 3rd time - still regional (but out of breast and lymph tissue now so it's circulating now) and they couldn't get clear margins when they took out 8 1/2 tumours, one edge too close to chest wall and it's resistant to chemo and I can't have any more radiation - my oncologist was going to research some trials and options for me but after weeks and weeks and following up and following up for over 2 months has now got breast care nurse to tell me that it's not their speciality area and they don't have time to look into it and maybe I should go to another oncologist.  Any one got suggestions on what tests I should ask for and/or what possible treatments to consider?

  • if you are cancer free then no need for Xeloda, its just another form of chemo normally given if you have had recurrence or mets.  I had it after a recurrence - didn't work for me - the B&**& of a cancer I have seems to be resistant to every chemo out there - I had my tumour sent to US for extra tests to see if there was any chemo likely to work and unfortunately nothing that is currently in use is likely to work. and I can't have any more radiation either and it's survived 7 weeks then 5 weeks - its a really stubborn thing. - so I have fingers and toes crossed that they have a breakthrough soon in the research that might help me.
  • Hi there @TripleNegMama I was diagnosed triple neg may 2016. Grade 3 (3cm tumor)stage 2a left boob had a mastectomy on thst side so I only had to have 8 rounds of chemp and no rads (logistical nightmare) then I took the other one off as my guts told me too. All scans clear 8 nodes taken all clear. I’ve been cancer free for 2 years now and I’ve never been offered  xeloda nor has it even been bought up with my oncol.  Is it because I had the mastectomy and no rads or should I be asking about this at my next visit ? My oncol is really up to date with treatments and trials and I would of thought he would of told me about this drug if he thought I would benefit from it. I have had any post chemo meds at all.

And as for you love I’d definitely be getting a new referal to a new oncol. That is bullshit and your breast care nurse needs a kick up the arse. Where abouts are you? I’m brisbane north if that helps and can also suggest an awesome support group if you need it. Biggest hug. Margie xx
  • Hi @TripleNegMama, I have TNBC, which has also metastasised , my oncologist was mentioning a new trial in Brisbane for Immunotherapy as she is aware I do not want to stay on chemo. As I have only been recently diagnosed the trial is for people who have already received a round of Chemo.
I think it may be time to get another Oncologist who will listen to you and has to time for you to research and discuss options. I have done a lot of research myself and everyone's treatment, diagnosis is variable and different and having an Oncologist who listens to you and your thoughts is invaluable for your treatment and peace of mind.
    Hope all goes well
  • Hi @TripleNegMama, I have TNBC and have just started radiation. When I finish next month my oncologist at the PA Brisbane has planned to put me on xeloda for six months.
  • Hi, I have Triple Negative Inflammatory Breast Cancer. My Oncologist at the Mater in Brisbane is talking about Xeloda for 6 months after I finish Radio therapy next month.
  • i have had xeloda after the previous recurrence - finished christmas eve and then the new recurrance was found April unfortunately.  I am trying to find out if I can have immunotherapy or some other option - as I also have a connective tissue disorder I may not be able to participate in immunotherapy trials
  • Hi TripleNegMama

I have also been treated for TNBC.   I wasn't actually given a stage,   Post neoadjuvant treatment I still had positive lymph nodes (and now know I also had cancer cells outside my nodes) and have been on a treatment plan of Xeloda, I'm now on my 6th cycle (and hopefully last).   I've chatted to a few other lovely girls on here who are being treated for TN and have had a similar treatment plan to mine, they will possibly be on Xeloda too as a post neoadjuvant treatment.

http://www.breastcancer.org/research-news/xeloda-improves-survival-for-her2-negative ;   will give you some information about the Japanese trial that showed successful for TNBC after neoadjuvant treatment with residual  c cells remaining.  You can also do some googling about it, but most of the articles are quite technical.

Other than Xeloda, Immunotherapy is the buzz around TNBC as a trial,  I would suggest you get a second opinion on treatment options from another oncolgost.   One of the staff here might be able to guide you better (1800 500 258).

    Warmest Regards,
    Jen

  • Hi @TripleNegMama, I'm sorry you find yourself in this position. Whilst I'm not in your situation - triple neg, or stage four,  just looked up The National Breast Cancer Foundation website. Here's a link to their research page.

I'm not sure where you are, or if you'd travel for treatment, but it may be somewhere to start.
I hope you find something soon.
    Take care
