Any supplementary or food suggest when Chemo treatment

Hi there,

While I am still waiting for the final report early Jan so as to conclude my treatment method, preliminary Chemo will be applied.  I am so worry I can't bear the consequence ans side effect cause during Chemo treatment.  Would like to hear any ideas you might came across and found useful to back up when Chemo period.  In existing, I drink raw potato juice, and carrot+beetroot juice daily.  I didn't it will help or not.......................

  • I agree with Bobbie and Robyn. My Oncologist also said not to drastically change my diet before chemo and that a balance diet is the way to go. Let your body decide what you can and can't eat through chemo. My craving was also tomato. I used to eat them just like an apple! And salt. I had to have salty foods. You will work out what you need and don't worry if you want something occasionally that's not quite healthy. Just eat what you want to eat. Everyone is scared before chemo starts Rosanna. It's the unknown that is the most feared I think. You do get into a sort of routine when you have had your first one. You'll know more of what to expect. You need to go with the flow and listen to your body. Tell your oncologist about everything you feel after your first and they will be able to adjust your treatment or recommend medication to help with the side effects. I kept a journal about my treatments and took that along with me to my oncology appointments so I could remember my symptoms. It's not easy by any means but you can do it. Before you know it you'll be finished. Have a lovely Christmas Rosanna. You have some challenges ahead of you but you'll do just fine. Love Janey xxx
  • Just the last two days,I have gone crazy for fish and tomatoes! My daughter has gone to the fish shop not far from here and bought fresh flathead to cook for dinner, two nights running. And today, all I wanted was a tomato sandwich with salt and pepper!I have found that as soon as I have chemo,I go right off sweet things.Bizarre!
  • I've had cravings too, l'd forgotten about them! My body has decided it needs crumbed fish pieces, and pretty much anything crunchy ie. Jatz, rice cakes... and this morning l had the biggest urge for onion... Could be worse l suppose!

  • Rosanna,I was terrified when I found out that I had to have chemo, just as you are.I finished my chemo last Monday, and I am OK:). I think many years ago, chemotherapy was really feared, and probably rightly so.But these days, the medicines that they give you to stop the side effects are really, really good. You hardly ever hear of anyone vomiting after chemo any more.Yes ,you do get tired, and I know that everyone is different, but if you have side effects, you only have to tell the oncologist, and they will always try to give you something to help.My main side effect has been the tiredness, and some niggly skin rashes.Nothing too bad though.I definitely agree with Yetbeung in that you only need to maintain a healthy ,balanced diet during chemo. You need to drink a lot of water to flush the drug from your system in the first couple of days, but other than that I don't think it is a time to change things.Maube after treatment you could look at that. Also, during chemo,I have had strange food cravings in the first couple of weeks, each cycle,so you can really only eat what you feel like.Enjoy your Christmas Rosanna, and I look forward to following your journey, and helping if I can. xoxo. • Hi Rosanna, I asked the same thing before l started chemo, as l thought l would have to "prepare" my body in some way. I asked my oncologist about supplements and any special diet, & she said as long as my diet is fairly balanced, that l should not start anything new, as my body will have enough to get used to. I have never taken supplements before, so lm not taking them now. I've been told by a lot of people in the know that the best "cancer diet" is a regular balanced diet, as anything in excess can cause harm, even some vitamins etc. I've been lucky that l can still eat most food, l think the best piece of advice given to me was to let my body decide what to eat, it will soon tell you if there's something it can't tolerate. I can't stomach the taste of cream any more, & l had a glass of wine the other day & it tasted like vinegar. If that's as bad as it gets for me, lm happy with that. Some people have trouble with upset stomachs etc. Good luck with it, hopefully you can continue enjoying your favourite food :-)
