Advice on Port Removal

Hi All,

I am scheduled to get my port taken out. I have been given the choice of having it done under a local or a general. I would appreciate insight from anyone who has had their port removed.

Thanks,

Helen.

  • Hi Everyone,

Just got home from having port removed. Had it under local and it was a breeze. The worst part was the 3.5 hour wait in day surgery for what turned out to be a 10 minute procedure. Felt very little. For me the local was a good decision.

  • Thanks everyone. I have decided to get the port out under local. My main reason for this decision was that 6 weeks ago I had a general when I had my hysterectomy, so decided to not put any more into my system.

Port comes out tomorrow. Will let you know how I get on.

  • Hi Helen, I didn't get a choice, they did it just under a local for me, the local was very painful to administer and lots of pulling and tugging like described above. It was done in an exam room, where you have x-ray etc, is that odd? I don't know, certainly it they were relaxed about it. It was a regional public hospital. To be alert during this type of thing was kinda interesting but very weird also. I was just so happy to get it out. I guess the only benefit of no sedation or anaesthetic is just hopping up and walking out when finished. I imagine if I was worried and asked I could have had it done differently. All the best, Louise
  • Oh my goodness you brave people. I had mine in & out under a general, very quick, only in for the morning. I also might add I have a huge needle phobia !!!

  • I also had mine done under heavy sedation in theatre both for insert and removal. Both my breast surgeon and oncologist recommended this and even my breast surgeon said he would never do a procedure like that just under local as he thinks we go through enough already with surgery chemo etc. All the best for your continued health Fiona

  • Hello!

I had mine removed using what they call LAWS - local anaesthetic with sedation.- in theatre. I was heavily sedated for the short time it took.I woke up very quickly - all over in about an hour or less.

I would think if this option isn't open to you and you are a calm person local anaesthesia would be fine, although you need to know there is a bit of pulling and snipping involved. Avoiding a GA is always good, but go for it if you would feel more relaxed that way.

    All the best.
