Vein damage

I had a left mastectomy and had chemo intravenously in the right hand and arm. I now have very visibly tight veins and vein tracking which is uncomfortable. It's now 4 months post chemo.... Will this ever go away?
  • My doctor was the first to alert me to the fact that you can drink too much water and wash away good minerals that are needed.

There has to be a managed amount.

Finding that perfect balance for you is difficult.

  • Hi girls I had the same problem and my breast surgeon referred me to a lymphodemea physiotheraphist who massaged my arm and got most of the vein cording out. I am in Melbourne and while there are not many of this type of specialist around but it was well worth finding one. Your breast surgeon should hopefully be able to recommend one to you too. :)

  • Thanks guys,

Looks like I need to be patient.... I have a history of blood clots so need to be extra careful.

For now I will try and drink more water.... stretch the arm and continue with the moisturiser.....

    Hopfully it all comes good.

  • I didn't get a port.

My veins reacted the very first treatment.

From there on in, they could only use a veing that was at the knuckle between my ring finger and the tall one next door.

My "everything" melted and I bruised easily, had problems with circulation, and got chemo brain.

I am told all of that has to do with the chemo damaging your circulatory system.

Six months later, I had blood tests in my elbow area.  Tiny little veins but they worked.

I no longer bruise like I used to.

    My circulation is improving.

YES.....it does get better.  It just takes time.

I drink three bottles of water a day......and always have since I was diagnosed.

  • Hi CurleySue

I've got exactly the same thing going on in my chemo arm, finished 5 months ago.  It is uncomfortable but  I keep remembering to stretch and I think I'm noticing it less, even though it still looks pretty weird when I extend my arm.

Really interested to hear from others who are further down the track, do they go away....?.....how so!

    Take care
