results after mastectomy & chemo plan
On 23rd May I had a skin & nipple sparing mastectomy, all went well with the surgery. My wound has healed well.
3 weeks post surgery I still have the drain in, finally today the output is down to 40ml, i'm hoping it's the same or less tomorrow so I can get it gone!
They removed all 17 lymph nodes and all 17 were cancerous. They were able to leave 1mm of healthy tissue between my cancerous spots & my chest wall. Originally there were 3 spots, but the Dr i saw said only two - apparently two had merged into the one. Estrogen & Progesterone positive, HER2 negative
I saw the Oncologist yesterday & have my chemo plan; I start chemo on 26th June. The plan is - Doxorubicin & Cyclophosphamide every 2 weeks for a total of 4 times. Following that, Paclitaxel every 2 weeks for a total of 4 times.

Following that will be radiation & hormone blockers for 5 years.

- LMK74MemberMkitty68, so good the first one is over. I hope you get no nausea, I have had none. I did feel like I had been run over for ten days with the first one, fatigue incredible ,but hey it's a good excuse to lay in bed and watch Netflix.
Lisa xo. - AnonymousNot applicable@MKitty68 so great to hear your first chemo is over! So great you had your friends there with you. It's different for everyone, but I sometimes overdid it on the second day when the steroids were working and then felt flat when they wore off. I thik it was the third day for me. Take care of yourself. Next time you'll know what to expect. I liked taking the iced water with slice of lemon to avoid that metallic taste. Anyway, enough advice from me. I hope you're resting. x
- MKitty68Memberwell i survived my first chemo. At first they had trouble getting the needle into the port, the first nurse said she just couldn't get it to go in & that there was a lot of fluid coming out. Then a second nurse came & had a go - i felt a pop & told them, seems that was it, it was just a little tougher that's all. Then they were not happy with how it was flowing, blood flowed out okay, but she needed a lot of pressure to get the saline to flow in... so she fiddled around a bit, pulled it out, popped it back in - fiddled a bit more then bingo - it started to flow really well. She was making absolutely sure that it was working well.
Put in the anti-nausea drug, flushed more, then the Doxy, that went in fine, then flush, then the other one in the bag... the metallic taste is yuk, but not too bad i spose, not as bad as i expected. I have had dinner, all went well, so far very little to no nausea - yet. I was glad i had 2 of my friends with me today, it actually made a difference to how well i coped when things weren't going as planned.
The port was a lot of fiddling around, but so very worth it in the long run. So glad i used the Emla patch though!
Thank you everyone for your well wishes. - MKitty68MemberThank you everyone, I appreciate your support
- melclarityMemberOh we are too lol. Been together nearly 3 years but I'm also moving to the other side of Melbourne where he is. Easier for me to get a job than him. Though further from my kids they'll float between their Dad and me. My partner and I were quite the pair, i was in the middle of chemo and he donated a kidney to one of his daughters, I went over to look after him 1 weekend and he ended up looking after me haha I was too ill.
You have lots to look forward to, just take each week as it comes with chemo. I found it best to have no expectations of myself as it was easier to go with it and for me was better in terms of learning to put me first and finally nurturing me, huge lesson, so in a weird way was good that I was quite ill I couldn't work. I found myself xxx Melinda - UnicornkissesMemberVery best thoughts go with you tomorrow for your chemo.
I hope you go through it knowing we are all willing you on. - MKitty68Memberthanks @LucyE
- MKitty68MemberThanks Melinda, mine also lives about an hour away. We are making plans to move in together though, over his side of Brisbane - there is really nothing keeping me way over here & his work is over there. I just need to wait for my tax refund
My oncologist wanted me to tale the Vitamin D, the probiotics are for the antibiotic side effect (thrush), i'm just hoping it works.
I have my son here at the moment which is nice at times, but frustrating at other times LOL but at least he will be able to lift & carry anything that needs it with packing & getting ready to move.
I will look at getting some coloxyl tablets tomorrow if i'm up to it. - AnonymousNot applicable@MKitty68 thinking of you tomorrow. Remember to avoid hot drinks an hour before and after chemo to avoid ulcers.
- melclarityMember@MKitty68 that is a real rough start! All the best for tomorrow it'll be ok. I went alone to most of my infusions, my partner came once and my teenage kids came twice. I preferred it that way, I just found that I didn't have the energy to worry about how others were coping by coming along with me. A friend dropped me off to my 2nd infusion but burst into tears seeing me bald, not helpful really. It's hard when you need your boyfriend the most and he's unwell, my partner lives an hour away so at the time was super hard, but so beautiful when he could be here.
Id get coloxyl tablets will work better for constipation. Also rinse your mouth with salt water everyday to help with mouth ulcers. Kennalog paste if they are sore.
I didnt take any supplements or vitamins through chemo as really the chemo eradicates everything and depletes your system, so until I was finished found it counter productive.
Youll surprise yourself self once you start and get going.hugs melinda xo
