Radiotherapy

I session 22 of 25 and skin has completely broken down and peeled off under breast , areas of chest as well as blistered and bleeding and dark red to mahogany colour from under arm all way down side then right across chest and under breast. It’s excruciating- making nauseous. Had anyone’s nurses offered dressings etc this stage - I’ve just been told to use moisturiser and keep breast from rubbing- disappointing at this stage - has as no other nurse available- don’t want to fuss but omg I’m in pain and already on opioids. Any suggestions? 3 to go..

  • Thanks @ddon and @Cathyw - I have to just persevere as just want it over. The peeling and bleeding the worst and continuous throbbing. Grin and bear it and get to next week. I don’t know how people work with this- my whole day is treating at home and treatment sessions - then painkillers to get a couple of hours sleep .
I think living alone , my daughter in Canberra with new baby just makes it bit harder . Bonus is I can have my top off all day  🤣
  • Yes hang in if you can, I'm so sorry it's this bad. I was lucky, didn't have your level of everything! Thinking of you and wishing I had something to help.
  • It feels like forever when you’re in pain, and yours must be making you so miserable.  My skin didn’t break down until 3 days after my last treatment and it took two weeks to heal. You are doing so well to keep on going. Hang in there and take lots of painkillers. X
  • Thank you @Abbydog - me too. Just thought I was going pretty well  but since last Monday it’s been all downhill so can’t wait for 3pm Thursday to start healing. 💗💗
  • Dear Louise64,
I am so sorry to hear of your skin breakdown. I hope that the next 3 treatments pass quickly, and you heal well.

  • I’m very sorry to hear, both the pain and being alone. I hope you’re taking pain relief, if it’s helping, so at least your body can heal a bit faster. Please focus on that point in the future, a few weeks from now, when you’ll be all healed with no pain, new skin and completely cancer free 💪🏻😊 Xx
  • Thank you @FLClover the Mepitel took layer of skin off, the salt solution with cold water only thing I can tolerate - I bought QV cream and then intensive cream but both sting. Moo goo all I can tolerate. At least it sounds like next week may bring some relief . Just want these next 3 sessions done. Even last few hours dark red and brown patches- so hot to touch - are worse. The raw red skin is also excruciating, underarm and side of breast . I’ll never have again- ever! Thanks for your support- doing it all alone just difficult  💗💗💗
  • Also, my oncologist suggested using Aloe Vera gel at the start of radiation, and then when I told her I was also using the leaf gel after radio finished she said to continue doing it.
  • Oh @Louise64, it doesn’t sound good at all, this pain you’re experiencing 😕. You must feel so confused as well and alone. My nurses told me they’d prob bandage it if it got to that point, but that they’d go ahead with the treatment anyway. Thankfully it didn’t get to that. There were places where the Mepitel wouldn’t stay on, such as under my arms and boobs, and they were also dark mahogany and very painful. The skin under my boobs was broken, red and also excruciating. I couldn’t even moisturise until ten days post radio, because the last mepitel that was put on covered the area and stays on post treatment a couple weeks. My underarms were treated for the burns during the last sessions as they weren’t covered. I did the salt water soak, for 20 mins. After that I’d cover the whole area with the inside gel of a big aloe vera leaf from the garden, after keeping it in the fridge. I’d feel relief after a few minutes, and the skin stopped hurting after about 2 days, even though I was still getting treatments. But it was constantly covered with the leaf gel. On some days I’d alternate with flamigel and QV, but the leaf helped the most. Same thing once my mepitel came off. Salt water soak, then gently scrub old skin awat and leaf gel everywhere, esp under boobs as it was unbeatable under there. Boob skin, which was constantly covered, was only pimply but otherwise not red or painful. After about 3 days broken skin was healed and pain completely gone. After 2 weeks no sign of radiation anywhere. All skin is white, soft and smooth. Not sure about the tissue underneath, but skin looks fantastic. Areas that were burnt aren’t even darker, and that’s with sensitive skin.
This was my experience, I hope it helps you in some way, or anyone else who might be suffering from this.
Good luck, I really do hope you find relief 🍀❤️.
    Mon Xx
