Radiotherapy week 2

Monday-social worker over talking about the port. Rads followed by approx. 1-2 mins appt with Radiation Oncologist. This must be the first time I really don't like one of my doctors. Tuesday-rads breast feels warm at the end of treatment. Physio running late, tell her I can't stay have to go to work. She replies oh well we will try next week. Wednesday-machine/s not working properly wait just over a hour. Breast warm again. Go into town, have a look around the South Melbourne market then go to Workcover doctor appt. Home, swimming, traffic gridlock in Werribee due to train derailment late to basketball. Thursday-rads, warm breast, go to work, lot of discomfort when reaching across baccarat table for cards, chips, cash etc. Friday-rads notice this morning and last night distinct warmness to breast. Wait half an hour after rads to see nurse only to be told when approach desk that my appointment has been cancelled and oops sorry should have told you. Big drawback of automated check in. All in all a lot easier than chemo, I'm moisturising 2-3 times a day and not really impressed with the allied health staff this week. Cheryle :)

  • Hi Cheryl,

I have had a warm, sometimes really hot breast all through radiation, finished 2 weeks ago.  On the weekend my breast heated up again and have had a lot of sharp shooting pain in both surgery sites.

We have had similar stories with no other option than Lumpectomy, I will chat on another blog with you about that.

Re the BCNurse, did you read my blog about her saying the whole splinter in the thumb thing, you wouldn't cut your thumb off. To which I told her if it was toxic and trying to kill me I would.  What a strange analagy for a nurse who is meant to be specializing in breast cancer patients to have.

All the best with the last weeks of your radiation, I took my Moo Goo udder cream with me to every session and put it on immediately after.  Now that my burns have healed I am putting paw paw ointment on, greasy but I can still feel it in the morning, so I think it works all night.

    Take care

  • Hi.. just read you blog.. and thought, this lady is doing a lot ! Perhaps you are doing too much right now ? I too, tried to get back to normal as much as possible, but with treatments and vasodilation from early menopause,  foggy thinking from chemo, soreness/ discomfort from right arm after axillary clearance, teenage children with busy lives, husbands working, etc .....it all started to become so much harder. I did too much and in hindsight, I wished I had stopped and given myself 6 to 12 months.. to get through treatments. They can certainly take their toll.

Why is your breast warm? Is it possibly to do with lymph drainage? Do you know how to do breathing and manual drainage to help keep the lymph moving around, but not pooling in one spot?

    Just wondering...

    Kathy.

  • The radiation therapists are wonderful and I accept machines break down (so far once a week). Peter Mac at Sunshine Hospital is 20 mins away by car. I did my chemo at Epworth Freemasons on Victoria Pde and they are fantastic. I just couldnt face going into the city every day. Lastly to make up for a shocking run trying to get my youngest son to training they won by one point today. Best match of the season. Go Ravens! Cheryle :)

  • Mmmmmm, doesn't sound like anything went right last week. Just one of those weeks that you want to scratch out of your diary and never want to see again. I hope next week is kinder to you.Are you having any "me"time yet?And lying on the radiation table doesn't count!!     Tonya xx

  • Hi Cheryle,

poor you that sounds really off putting. I have been reasonably lucky with Peter Mac Moorabbin so far.

I have found the staff fantastic, I like my doctor and on Thursday I asked to see a nurse who then scheduled my doctor faily quickly, so really not too much waiting.

Luckly I have income protection and have chosen to stay off work until after my treatment as I don't know how I would manage all the appointments and work. Also each day I go they seem to reschedule the next days treatment (at least I have notice).

This week I get a day off as the machine is getting serviced and to be honest I need a day of not travelling.

I hope with all my heart things improve for you.

    Take care

  • Hi Cheryle, you have had a ridiculously annoying time this week haven't you. You must be really cheesed off (not really the right word I know, more like something sounding like 'missed' but starting with P). Lets hope that next week goes a lot smoother for you. You mentioned Werribee. Are you being treated in Melbourne? I'm going through Peter Mac in East Melbourne and everyone involved with my care has been fantastic so far. Fingers crossed this will continue. Glad to know that rads are going well for you though. Take good care of that warm breast. Lots of love Janey xx
