Radiotherapy- engorged and sore

hi ladies, I’m having RT in Singapore, it’s a holiday today and Monday so doctors not working and no RT today to ask.

I’ve completed 4/18 sessions, period due within the week. The targeted breast for RT is slightly engorged and generally sore and uncomfortable. I switched from a crop top to a closer fitting wireless bra which has helped a little.

My radiation oncologist said this would be a side effect, the nurses said it’s just my period. I’m ok with that, but wondering if there is anything I can do to help or ease the discomfort?

Thanks everyone xx

  • I used Dermaveen as well as other lotions & potions. However, when feeling a lot of discomfort in the final week, I also used a 'kitchen towel' (the blue 'holey' stuff for cleaning sinks etc) soaked in salt water (a good amount of salt disolved in warm water), squeezed out & stored in a container in the fridge - you do 2 or 3 of them  - and keep swapping them round - just placing them on your boob to cool it down - something about the salt is very soothing.

All the best - I hope you get some relief. xx
  • I used Dermaveen also and is available in Singapore. My radiotherapy centre also supplied Cetaphil also available in Singapore.
  • You can also buy Calendula cream in a Singapore which I thought quite good according to my web search.
  • Many on here sear by MooGoo udder cream and I believe you can buy it in Singapore according to my brief web search.
  • @Mightystar just to ask the obvious you are applying a good emollient three times a day or more ? Also some ladies have found Mepitel film helpful in reducing the side effects of radiotherapy. Just not sure what the treatment protocols are in Singapore. Also be aware heat and UV seems to activate the radiated breast so be careful with both.
  • I had that happen and found soaking in a warm salt bath helped. Alternatively, cool packs might help- put some wet face washers in the fridge for awhile and then apply to sore boob.
