Radiation

Hi everyone,

so, after 4 months of chemo (I won't go there, you all know what that's like!), mastectomy and now finally radiation.

i have just had radiation number 11, 14 more to go. So far so good and skin seems to be holding up ok at the moment. I've been rubbing in Aveeno cream with oatmeal, twice, sometimes 3 times a day. I hope that it's doing its job!!

my problem is my back which I hurt just turning over in bed. Can you believe it! Never known pain like it! A month later it is still not right. Dr sent me for an X-ray which came back ok but I don't think they show up slipped disks do they. I will also have a bone density scan next week to see if I have oesteoporosis .

cant believe I have got this far and now my back has given out! And I feel pretty good now apart from that. Damn!

Having had treatment since last July is exhausting I agree! Still, there is light at the end of the tunnel for me. Now just to get this back sorted!

  • Lol! I know, what's with the super-skinny beds - more like lying on a plank!

  • That's no fun Linda I'm about 6 radios behind you appears we've had same treatments.  As someone else said I wondered about mastectomy back curvature etc I've been rather lopsided since mastectomy I feel like the old hunch back I can't seem to get my back straight.  Gee that would be frustrating being in that amount of pain.  I hope they find some relief for you soon I've been having physio for a while now for left arm at this stage we've decided to give it a break for a few weeks I'm just exhausted from the radio but maybe that's exhaustion from 7 months of treatments surgeries etc like you I was so relieved to finish chemo xxx

  • Linda I am sorry to hear about your bad back & hope things get sorted for you soon.

Your nearly at the half way mark for your radiation & I am glad that you are finding it OK, that could be possibly me my next step.

    Sending hugs. xx

  • Thanks Jane, that was interesting. I had wondered if it was something to do with all the arm exercises I had to do too. When I go for my bone density scan next week that might show up something. If the disks are brittle it might explain the pain. It feels like two disks rubbing together now but at the time it felt like someone had stabbed me in the back to the side of the spine.

i will be seeing a Physio next week for my cording and scar tissue. She knows about my back as she was helping me to get on and off the bed. Radiation at this point doesn't help. Have you seen how narrow their beds are haha!

  • Hi Linda, good to hear all is going smoothly so far with your radiation, sounds like you're doing all the right things :-)

Bummer though about your back. Not sure if my story might help but my back was really painful towards the end of treatment and it was partly to do with some degenerative osteoporosis but mostly because the mastectomy had unbalanced my spinal column and was exacerbating my (mild) scoliosis. After treatment (and reconstruction) I ended up seeing a physio who has helped me to strengthen my core and regain better balance and I don't have that agonising pain anymore. I understand from the physio that she often sees ladies who have had mastectomies and have subsequent back pain due to being lopsided. Perhaps this is worth looking into?

In any case, I hope you get some answers and some relief soon, and all the best for the remainder of your radiation treatment. Jane xx

  • Hi Linda, so sorry about your back! What a bummer! The things about injured backs is that sometimes it doesn't take much to throw them out. I did mine about 15 years ago when I sneezed! It took a good 7 weeks before I was back to my old self again, so make sure you give it time. It will get better it may just be a really slow process. I am hoping it won't be but if it is, that's pretty usual.

    Take care, Nadine
