Radiation therapy side effects

im about to begin radiation therapy and am not sure the best cream to use for side effects.  Oncologist suggested one but only available online.  Any other creams that are easily acquired?  Would love to hear suggestions/personal experiences with creams.

  • I used mepitel and Moo Goo during rads and my skin held up really well.  Some tenderness and redness about 3 weeks after treatment.
  • Qv creams all the way for me too.   I had 6 weeks of treatment and only had a bit of skin breakdown in the crease of my boob and chest wall - apparently large boob, lots of radiation, hot hot hot on top of itself is not great for the skin.  Then it was solugel with a dressing for a couple of days and then a silicone dressing after that. I’m still moisturising now and I’m nearly 4 months post but my boob is still a bit warm so I’ve been advised to keep at it cause it will stop any issues
  • I was advised by the nurse to use QV creams.
There is an intense gel, moisturizer in pump bottle and a gentle wash lotion to use in the shower.
Used other creams provided by the clinic towards the end of treatment under dressings.
  • Thank you lovely ladies, guess I'll be going shopping for some MooGoo and aloe vera.  My oncologists did suggest StrataXrt but it's quite expensive and as I'm not working thought there must be a cheaper alternative that works just as well 😀.  Treatment so far has had positive outcomes, here's hoping it continues with this radiation therapy 🙏 Thanks again xx
  • Hi @Maria063, I used MooGoo prior, during, and after radiation treatment. Oncologist also supplied StrataXRT which creates a film to help your skin. My skin held up well. Went from swollen, blotchy to tanned and flaky- I called it the lamington look. No blisters though. There is also mepital film. But my oncologist suggested it worked better for those that have had mastectomy, can be tricky to keep on for lumpectomy patients. Best of luck with your treatment. Xx
  • Hi @Maria063

MooGOO all the way.  You can buy it from priceline, some other pharmacies and health stores.  Personally I am not fond of the smell of it but it works well. I threw in a bit of manuka gold honey cream along the way and some sudocream where my chest had burnt a bit.
I had 30 rads and my skin held up well until the last 8 or 10 sessions.  I used solosite for when the skin broke down at the end and then some flamazene after rads finished which healed it up really fast.
Apart from that, I had no issues with rads at all.

    All the best lovely.

  • Hi @Maria063

Welcome to the forum - there is lots of info here to help you thru your treatment.

Moogoo always gets a good wrap .... I also used sorbelene (as recommended by the Rads Dept at Port Macquarie) and I also used Aveeno.   I had some redness & slight skin breakdown towards the end after 4 weeks of treatment, this time last year.   At one stage, I even used some Banana Boat Aloe Vera Gel!  (VERY cool & soothing.)

All the best with your treatment.  xx
