Radiation effects

We have finally come home after 6 weeks radiation treatment in the big city....oh what a relief..

Even our poor old dog, MILO, has slept all night and all day.........he was so stressed out in Sydney, pacing and not sleeping very well, even though he had another dog there as a friend.

My skin is peeling and raw. It hurts to put creme on. I am using Flamazine ATM. I saw the Dr before we left Sydney and she said everything looked "normal". Really........all this damage to my skin is normal?  She said there should be recovery of the skin in 2 weeks.

Living in the suburbs of Sydney was hectic and chaotic, something my husband and I are not use to. Every day was a huge effort for us. Trying to find parking at the hospital, living with another family, feeding ourselves and trying to stay positive  was harder than I thought it would be.

We are so lucky to be home now, even though its raining now, this is bliss to me........

A big thank you goes to my wonderful husband. He was fantastic everyday looking after me and checking on how I was feeling. He helped with changing the dressing on my chest too, he drove me to the hospital, he did everything and more. I wish everyone has someone to lean on like him............

  • I to had severe burns dressing change 3 times a day , mepitel film and solugel, and smother it, I  kept it in the fridge was heaven, at home no bras loose tops and I was stunned at how quickly the burns went,  I hope it settles for you adean

  • Hi Michelina, my skin under my breast and arm was weeping and very very sore after six weeks too and the nurse gave me xylocaine gel 1% (its a local anaesthetic, can also be bought as 2% over the counter at the chemist) to put on first then bepanthan cream after the gel has dried a little and I found that helped with the pain when putting it on. I found the moo goo really good too but didnt use it when the skin was badly broken and weeping.I finished my treatment mid November 2015 and it is all nicely healed now but not much fun when you are going through it. I feel for you.

  • It must be so nice to be home, I bet Milo is so happy :)

    Your husband sounds amazing x

Just keep asking the questions if you are not sure about things.

  • Hi , moo goo udder cream is the best . You can use it all over your skin too. I had burns and mine bleed too. Most painful . Hope yours improves soon xx

  • Hi michelina

Sorry to hear about your skin reaction.  Try moo goo cream its really good. When I had radiotherapy last year they used a mepitel film which was great it was a bit annoying having it on the whole six weeks but it worked really well and my skin had virtually no reaction just a little dry. I think it would good if more radiotherapy places used this and perhaps BCNA could look into this and inform people of this option.

Hopefully your skin will feel better soon. Jackie x
