Radiation Burns

Hello everyone,
I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in August last year, a month after my 25th Birthday. I underwent chemotherapy, double mastectomy and finally radiation which I finished on the 28th of June, and the radiation burns are becoming quite sore. The doctor gave me sorbelene, solugel and panadeine forte , and I had some people recommended hemp oil cream and moo goo, however I was wondering what has worked best for those of you out there who went through radiation.
thanks
Jemma

  • HI @Jemz,

Have you tried Flamazene?  Cleared up my burns within a week. It contains silver so you can't use it during radiation but is fine after and works quickly.  Solosite is quite good as well.

  • Thanks guys, been layering on lots of sorbelene and moogoo over the past week. The skin in the creases of my neck have peeled and are quite red and sore when dry, otherwise the skin in my armpit and under my breast aren’t too bad. They gave me a bunch of dressings to put on myself if need be (im actually an emergency who’s previously worked in oncology for two years), but find the dressings are more irritating than anything. Ill continue to put lots of sorbelene and moogoo on and see how I go :)
  • Hey @Jemz92 Joey Liz knows  her stuff. I had very few problems until the very end of rads, two weeks after I'd finished I was beside myself. Weeping sores and it hurt like hell, just at the point I'd thoughtbid be done with it all.
The really interesting thing is that rad burns, like the sunburn that is completely wrecking your holiday, disappear literally overnight. They are all you can think about for days and you fill in the time trying anything to ease the misery. Then, gone. A bit of peeling skin and a 'Im never doing that again' attitude is all that's left. Hang in there, you've done the hard yards. Mxx
  • Hi @Jemz92 is your skin red and itchy but in tact or has it broken down and is peeling?
If in tact the solugel should be fine but I'd recommend keeping it in the fridge as it will be nice and cool to pop on. Also it may sound strange but the old wives tales for mastitis of cabbage leaves works wonders (keep in crisper then place over your skin but only if your skin is in tact)
If your skin has started to break down I would recommend visiting your radiation nurses (you can go back to them even though your finished) and get some dressings . Mepilex lite dressings are great (like a thin foam) and also they should be able to give you some gel pads for your nipple.

The skin reaction tends to peak about s week after finishing but should ease about 3 wks after. Xx
  • Hey @Jemz92 congratulations on going though all that at such a young age , so sorry you had to !
I have just done 3 weeks of radiation ,1 week to go , so far no burns but maybe they will come !! I have used sorbelene but mainly Moo Goo ,its seemed to do the job so far . A nurse I met at my work recommended solugel so may be that may help
Good luck ,hope you find some relief
    xx
