Radiation after lumpectomy
wondering what's the normal time after lumpectomy does radiation start? I had the small cancer and one node with cancer removed on 1st April. ( one node had changing cells - pre cancer). Oncologist radiologist has set start date at 26 May, but I've been reading they usually start radiation 3-4 weeks after surgery. I should have asked WHY 8 weeks as my scar is great but wondered what other BC people THINK.

- JJ70MemberRadiation ahead for me, after surgery. Any recommendations for creams? A friend has recommended David Deans Radiation Cream, but it is out of stock everywhere on-line. Any others?
- sandramjMemberYes radiation is five days a week (except public holidays maybe) and it was 3 months after surgery - I wondered why initially but when I saw the end result of the radiation type of burn i understood why they don’t radiate wounds. Good luck, look after yourself. Whatever it takes. I was fine during radiation but got tired weeks later. Maybe a reaction to the hormone therapy. Or maybe just the letting go of stress and wound up emotions from diagnosis!
- LMK74MemberHi @viking1, I have never heard of neutropenia with rads. It wasn't listed as a side effect from the info sheet I got. I just finished 6 weeks of rads last week, fatigue is kicking in big time. When do you start.
- viking1MemberI wrote a post about this but can't find it. I am scared of getting neutropenia again with rad. Has anyone had this? I read online it is possible but that might be incorrect info. The cancer was in my breast, not bone related.
- viking1MemberI was told that I get a 4 week break after chemo round 6 and then radiation for 3-6 weeks every day except sat and sunday.
- RomlaMemberGlad to hear you are feeling ok - finished my radiotherapy 28/5 was bit tired week after and lucky minimal skin issues . I too am due for hormone therapy as am er+ but had to get teeth fixed first as extractions/ implants risk onj on treatment so due start August - think will be AI and need bone builders as have osteoporosis and AI cause fractures. Agree about need to let go and trust medical team but understand is hard. PS did not have scans after except bone density
- adeanMemberTake care as the last few tend to deplete your energy
- sandramjMemberWell today I am rapt to say I'm feeling gr8 after 20 radiation treatments and 10 more to go. Then I'm presuming back to oncologist to start hormone therapy and a month or so later have scans to check the cancer has not visibly spread. So far so good. Trusting this will continue. Well trying my very best to let go and trust.
- HulosMemberHi, i saw my radiation oncologist today, had my mastectomy on 14/6, she said the mapping would be done 4 weeks from today, followed by radiation a week later.
Thats approx 7 weeks.. - SnowieMemberHi, l had my lumpectomy last September and had to wait 7 weeks before radiotherapy began and that was in the private system. It probably depends on the number of patients at the time? I really don't know.
