Mums got no hair!

My five yr old tells the entire world I'm bald - pretty much anyone who will listen! My 9 yr old is slightly more circumspect about this 'new' look. As for me - well it's all pretty new. I usually wear a wig or hat when out, but last week just a bright bandana in the Sydney heat. Note to self - wearing a bandana attracts lots of questions, looks, blessings from priests and you are bound to run in to people you haven't seen for years! Ducking into the shops turned in to an expected social event. I've just completed chemo round 4. First three not too bad but number 4 has me down like a sack of potatoes. Struggling with joint pain, dodgy stomach etc - I'm on day 7 after docetaxel - it will improve won't it!,,

  • Yes it will improve, it mightn't feel like it at the time but it will happen. My 9 year old thought I was the coolest mum. I dressed up like a pirate for one school pick up, with an eye patch and a bandana. But the best one was when I was running late for the school run I grabbed my keys and dashed off, it was only when I got to the school and reached out for my scarf,or a hat that I realised I'd have to walk into the school sporting the Kojak look.

  • Yes,it's way too hot in this Sydney heat at the moment!Like Deanne said,it's different for everyone.I had Docetaxel, and was one of the lucky ones,I think. My side effects were minimal compared to lots of other ladies.Day 9 or 10 was when I would really start to pick up again.Take care and try not to worry about the bald thing. At the end of my fourth round,I just decided to go without headcovers at all.It was right before Xmas last year, and way too hot.It really is a great feeling if you can do it :) Cheers xoxRobyn
  • You have a very good attitude/sense of humour especially considering how awful you must feel right now! I had Fec then Docetaxel chemo last year. Just look after yourself and don't push it. I ended up in hospital with a high temp on Day 11 after chemo 4 (first Docetaxel). I had pushed myself to go for a 3km walk the day before and I think this depleted a few too many white blood cells! Some of us can have a lot of trouble with this drug so really rest and let others help. Keep a close check on your temp too. Docetaxel was much harder than FEC for me but others do not have much trouble so we are all different. But you do get through it and boy is it good when you start to feel better after that last chemo. I am just past 18 months since diagnosis and life is different but very good again. That will be you too, enjoying life with your kids again soon. I hope you feel better soon but just take it easy until you do. Sending you a gentle hug. Deanne xxx
