Have had great results with this gel on radiation burn

Hi everyone,

I finished radiation on Jan 5 and despite keeping the Mepitel film on for most of my 30 treatments, I was quite badly burnt, particularly in the fold under my breast.  Once I took the film off, about a week from the end, because I couldn't stand the itch anymore, I found that my skin in that area was raw and broken.  It was really sore and it's so hard to heal that area, because it's always 'folded'.

I was so excited to get my film off, but to be honest was quite horrified with how my skin looked and felt underneath, so I was completely deflated (and quite upset) that day.

A couple of things worked well to heal it REALLY fast.  Nurses gave me a special folded dressing to wear, and I applied a product I got from my kinesiologist, called Renu28.  This stuff is outstanding.  Within a few days, the skin had calmed right down (clinical staff were so surprised) and within a week it was all healed.  Once I'd finished my treatment, I also used it on the small area beside my nipple that received the 5 targeted radiation blasts they give you at the end.  Same quick results (and helped my wide excision scar look much better as well).

I moisturised the whole breast area with MooGoo udder cream as well and am so happy with how my skin looks!

Other than where I get it, I'm not sure where you can get it, because it's not sold in stores. Google might come up with a reseller in your state (feel free to ask if you can't find anyone and I can ask Renee.)  It's not cheap, but I can't recommend it enough.

Best,

Nicola

  • Hi Rosetta

For what its worth I had my Mepitel applied a lot!  Sometimes towards the end every 2nd time.  The annoying bit about creams around it and the places it has lifted is that it makes it lift more.  I suggest that on Monday dont apply cream that morning after your shower on the areas where it needs to be reapplied as it will just fall off again a couple of hours later especially in this hot weather.  Even though the nurse will try and clean the area it wont stay on.  The pieces need to be as large as possible as little slices will simply peel off.  I only ended up with one original piece by the end of treatment.

It certainly does make you itch.  If it gets too bad ask your doctor for a small amount of steroid cream and it will make it so much more comfortable.

I perservered for 5 weeks during radio and then another 10 days after that and it was well worth it in the end.  Its been 6 or so weeks since I finished and its looking great.

    All the best

  • Hi Nicola,

I'm happy that you were able to have your burns heal quickly. I've just completed my first week of radio & have had the Mepitel applied. Having said that, it was a very hot week & it had to be reapplied on day 2. Then areas were lifting each day &  I was advised to cut away loosened areas so that by day/ treatment 5, less than half remained. The staff I approached told me not to worry & to just apply sorbolene cream they'd given me 3 times per day - they'll reapply it Monday. So I use my creams generously this weekend in readiness for the next 20 treatments. How often did you need your Mepitel reapplied? It certainly does make you itch.

    Take care

  • Hi Nicola, so happy for you that radiation is over!

I've been seeing a physiotherapist since my mastectomy at the end of November and she has been using the same gel on my scars. I was thinking of investing in some before I start my radiation in June. It is expensive but I'm quite anxious about the effects on your skin from the treatment even with the film in place.

Thanks for the tip - I will definitely buy some now!

    Good luck and thanks xo
