First round of Chemo wearing cool cap

I had my first round of chemo yesterday. I’m scheduled for 4 cycles of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide at 21 day intervals. I really have no expectations of how I’ll handle treatment, however I am a little surprised to wake today feeling ‘normal’. This is an unexpected opportunity to enjoy the day. I realise this will probably change in the coming days, but small positives make me feel happy.

I wore a cool cap for the infusion which took my time in hospital from 2 hours to 4 1/2 hours. The first 2 minutes was a little intense but after that it was fine. I hope to retain my hair but again am prepared to lose it as well.

If you’ve had my combo of chemo, what were your best and worst days?

  • Hi @Tracey2800 I found days 3 and 4 the worst days usually fatigue the worst thing.
I tried the cold cap but only did 2 sessions then decided to shave my head. I couldn't do with only washing once a week and with 30 degree heat in QLD i needed to just stand in the shower and let that water run over my head! It was coming out in clumps and was finding hair everywhere, I haven't lost all my hair just at the sides where my sunnies go over my ears and its thinned. I'm onto Taxol now 3rd dose tmrw.
    Good luck xx
  • No worries. Don't hesitate to ask if you've got any questions. K xox
  • Hi @Tracey2800  I had my first round of the same chemo you are having on a December 5th. The day after was fine but by the evening of the next day the nausea had set in. I had been given Maxalon but ended up at the GP to get some Zofran which helped a lot more. Still had a few more days of nausea but was able to get back into work for a half day a week later. I have been working half days since then and other than some tiredness later in the day I’m coping ok. I also used the cold cap, have had a bit of hair loss but so far not too bad. I hope everything goes okay for you over the next couple of weeks. My next chemo is 28th December.
  • I had a different cocktail but I felt quite normal for the first 3 months (apart from my hair, cold cap wasn't an option then) and only had one really annoying side effect on the second cocktail. It can happen that you don't have really bad side effects. But the first full cycle usually gives you a fair idea. Best wishes.
  • The day of chemo was a wipeout.  Day 2 and 3 I had an awesome burst of energy from the steroids. Day 4 was crash day for me as well.

I had AC so a little different and I found it cumulative so the 4th round took longer to recover from.

I used the cold cap and kept my hair.  Try and give it a shove down on the top regularly so it stays firm on the middle of your scalp as this seems to be the problem area.

    All the best lovely.

  • I was just tired day 2. It was day  and 4 that was most difficult.  Used this day to get things done.
  • I hit the wall at day 3, on each cycle.
drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated
I didnt use a cold cap and my hair was gone by about day 14.
We are each individuals so we all react differently.

  • Hi @ Tracey2800 I am sorry you have to join us here but happy you have found us. This community will give you so much support. I love it on here and pop in regularly to visit.  My first round I was all over the place as I was unprepared for the side effects. I had horrendous heartburn from night one but was later given tablets to counteract this. Nausea was most intense for me on day three and four. By day seven I was ready to do normal activities. Personally, Rounds two and three were a bit easier for me but round four left me drained for five weeks. Everyone is different. Some people have no side effects at all. I had the full gamut of side effects but only a couple were severe enough to have to counteract with other drugs. Lots of other ladies will hop on here and give you official info and you can hop on here and rant to your hearts content. Lots of hugs
