Did Mepitel film let anyone else down?

I finished my 25 radiotherapy treatments a week ago (following on from mastectomy and chemo). My radiation oncologist offers Mepatil film, and given the results of the NZ study, I was prepared to put up with the inconvenience of living with it through a Queensland summer for the minimised skin trauma.

Sadly though, it doesn't seem to have worked for me. I have a big area (about 25x20cm) in the middle of my chest that is angry red, blistered, oozing, bleeding and incredibly uncomfortable. This area was under Mepatil the whole time, until the skin began to break down at the end.

I'm really disappointed and frankly a bit depressed. I knew it would take a little while to recover, but no one prepared me for this amount of unpleasantness. It's emotionally draining. I still have to go to hospital daily for dressings (I thought I was done with that place for a little while!), I can't sleep, and I can't really get out and about (too sore and sticky).

After expecting a good result from the Mepitel, I feel like a bit of a freak.

Is anyone else a Mepatil dunce?
  • @Captaingrumpypants So sorry to hear of your unpleasant journey with Mepitel. I have just finished rad & had the Mepitel on me for the entire treatment plus the 2 weeks after which is when the symptoms peak. Half my chest to half way around my back & under my arms were covered. I agree, it is a bit fiddly & during treatment I visited the nurse every day for nips & tucks & replacement strips due to it peeling & curling. I felt like i was a nuisance but they were lovely about it & said it was their job. Unlike you, I had a wonderful experience with it. i took it off a week ago which was 2 weeks after treatment & you wouldn't even know I had any rad done. I am very fair skinned & the area treated is till pale & exactly as it was before i started. I have no redness or pinkness & no peeling or dry skin. i am now just using calendula cream 2-3 times a day to moisturize the area. Very occasionally, i get a slight itch here & there but nothing really to worry me. I can't believe how good my skin is & so sorry you have had the opposite reaction. I would thoroughly recommend the product but it obviously hasn't worked for you. I do remember my nurse telling me one day that they don't use the Mepitel in QLD or hotter/humid states as the climate doesn't suit the product. Sweat causes the film to peel & it lifts underneath & bubbles therefore doesn't stick to your body very well. That may be what was wrong & maybe the product shouldn't have been given to you as the film has to be in direct contact with the skin. There is another newer product out now that is a barrier cream you just rub on & it's very expensive so some hospitals may not use it because of this. I feel very sad for you that you have put up the film for so long & it hasn't done it's job. i would go back to where you had the treatment & see the rad onc or nurse for some cream. The nurse & rad onc where I went both gave me a script & a sample tube of Cortic-DS 1% (or you can get 1/2%) cream which is specific for redness, itching & inflammation of the skin after rad. It is a steroid cream. I haven't had to use it as my skin is great just moisturising with the calendula cream. I hope this helps & good luck. It would be feedback for the staff to see your reaction & then they may not give it to others as the climate doesn't suit the product. Take care.
  • Thanks @JoeyLiz, glad it's not just me that thinks this is a bit beyond normal. They did pop a small test patch on for a few days, with no obvious issues, and about half the treated area under the film is fine. Maybe I'm just an extra-delicate little flower!
  • Sorry the mepitel didn’t work for you. Unfortunately everybody’s skin reacts differently to the radiation and even the best products creams etc can’t prevent a reaction. Did they check prior that you weren’t allergic to it? As it does seem an extreme reaction.
  • @Zoffiel I chuckled solidly at this. Thank you. I'm sure the puppies were drawn to your winning personality just as much as your delicious bbq fragrance!
  • Great user name @Captaingrumpypants.
Reactions to rads are a genuine luckydip. Some redheads that get sunburnt on a full moon cruise through with skin intact, some leathery old ckickies end up with weeping sores. Go figure.
I had rads at a Genisis facility last year, some of the other sites where trialling mepitel but up here in the sticks they hadn't heard of it so wouldn't even let me use it if I bought it myself.
I was one of the weeping sores people. I'd go for a walk and dogs would follow me,  it took  a while to realise that was because I smelled like a pork roast. So disappointed, I thought I was the puppy whisperer.
  • I should add that I also have a nasty wound in my armpit, but to be fair, the Mepitel always peeled off that bit within minutes of leaving the clinic, so that I can accept. The chest though? Not at all fair if you ask me!
