Deep inspiration breath holding radiotheru

I'm I to my 4 th week of the deep inspiration breath holding radiation. A relatively new technique for L sided breast cancer. I know it's protecting my heart but I'm finding it quite exhausting and difficult to do at times. I as wondering if any others have had this form of radiotherapy and what their experience was. It's hard work getting my lung inflated to the correct level 8 times in a row and holding my breath for 20 seconds feels like forever. Jenny

  • Hi Jenny,

I was so interested to read your post.

I haven't even been for my mapping session yet, an infection has me in a holding pattern. All going well, I should be there this coming week. My BC is also on my left side and I remember the oncologist saying something about measures they take to try and prevent damage to the heart.

Perhaps this is what he was talking about. I'm going to mention your story to him and see what comes out of it. Sounds like some sort of breathing exercises, maybe thai chi or yoga or something might help.

I hope you find what's right for you and if you are interested I'll post an update for you after my mapping.

I'll be thinking of you on the day!

    Hugs

    San-Dee

Hi Jenny, haven't heard of this type of rads before, but understand that it's all aimed to protect your heart. How many more treatments do you need to have ? Hoping that there's not many more for you. Sending you a big cuddle, Trace ????????

  • Hi Jenny, I just finished 6 weeks of this treatment this week. What a relief to have it all over with and you must be getting close to finishing too. I found I had good days and bad days with the breathing. I started out well but around the middle of the treatment I got quite anxious and nervous about the breathing as for some unknown reason it was easier to do some days than others. It's rather hard to explain unless you have had this treatment but I talked with another lady and she felt the same as me, so I do know how you feel. All I can suggest is try to relax and it will get easier. After a few not so good days I came right and made it to the end feeling much more comfortable with the technique. Good luck. Debra :)

  • I like the sound of gently hugs. Thanks for your support. Jenny

  • Thanks Anne Marie that's is helpful. I'll give it a try. Not confusing.  Thanks for thinking of me. Jenny

  • Hi Jenny, I'm about to start Radiothreapy on the 18th May to my left breast.  Not sure if this will help but I used to teach 'stress management and relaxation' classes. To fill your lungs you tummy should increase or rise up. And to empty lungs ... Breath out the mouth.  It may help to practice this lying down at home. Sometime people think when you inhale your tummy should concave......this happens when you shallow breath. But that's not correct. When the tummy goes out you are filling your lungs correctly. And this may also relax you.

Hope I have not confused you and I hope the rest of your treatment goes well.

  • Hi Jenny,

First time I've heard of this. Sounds a really good thing to do. My left sided chest wall radiation was ages ago.

Someone might chime in here with some breathing techniques.

I guess If I were doing it again, maybe each day while not on the "table" (can't remember, is that what it's called?) I'd include some relaxing breaths and happy thoughts

Kinda a "rehearsal" with accompanying happy "mind pictures and thoughts" that will help you through each of the 8 breaths in a row, gentle hugs, (another!) Jenny x
