Chemo decided and booked in

I had a week full of appointments this week - first meeting with radiologist, CT scan, bone scan, blood tests, meeting with work to discuss my options there while going through treatment.

I think I have finally decided on the FECD chemo combination. A little bit longer treatment time but slightly better odds of the cancer not recurring and I'm really grasping at that.

My oncologist has also strongly encouraged me to try the cold cap - and I was all ready to shave my head and rock the head scarves and hats. I'll give it a go and see how successful it is. If it doesn't work or I can't stand the "brain freeze" then I can always stop.

Chemo is booked in to start on the 1st of March. I am such a wuss with needles - hope I don't embarrass myself too much. :-/

  • I have different chemo to you but after 14days in a lot of my hair fell out but not all! Now I am at 2weeks after the 2nd dose and while a little more fell out, I still have just enough to bless myself and I have not used any cold caps.

  • We all react differently, but it's is good to see how others fair..and that we can be there for each other ...I don't have the option of the cold caps either, but I'm interested to see how it goes for you!

    Best of luck!

  • Thank Tracy - it would be interesting to compare notes on the FECD!

  • Thanks for that advice - to keep persisting through any hair loss. I may have given up too quickly!

  • Good luck with your chemo. Can't escape the needles- blood tests cannulas, even if you have a port or a PICC line there are still needles.  Deep breaths, closed eyes, meditation or anti- anxiety medication- use what it takes to get you through.

I did the scalp cooling and even though my hair did thin significantly initially,  it started to grow back very thick in the 5th month of my six months of chemo.  The literature I'd read advised persisting through any hair loss and so i'm pleased I did.

  • I had FEC/D. We all react differently. Wishing you all the best.

The nurses here weren't keen on the cold caps, so it wasn't an option. I'll be interested to hear how you go with it.

    Take care, Lyn

  • I just started the same treatment... I too was afraid if the cannula as my veins go into hiding... No need though, my team was awesome and gave my veins time to make an appearance... Successful first time and left hardly a bruise.... If you get to nervous they can give you something, but the chemo nurses are really beautiful and reassuring... I wish you all the best with your treatments and hope you sail through without too much trouble...
