Burnt Boob

Hi All

Just wondering how others coped when they got burnt from radiation. I finished my 25 days of radiation last Thursday. Before I finished I started to burn but since stopping it has got worse. The hospital dressed it on Thursday and now I am doing it myself until Monday when I go back to the hospital to see the nurse and get reassessed. The nurse gave me all the stuff I need to put on it. I breezed through radiation but now have come to a sticky end! It is very sore. I still put cream on my boob where I can see it (the rest has bandage around it). How have others got on in a situation like mine?

  • Hi Ady

I finished my 30 sessions six weeks ago. I burnt & was peeling by the end, & yes it did get worse, but it was starting to improve by the two week mark. The nurses gave me some zinc & castor oil (like your suds realm) to use after treatment, which I used until it was finished the other day. I think it really helped with my healing.

    Take care, Lyn

  • Hi Everyone

Thanks for all your feedback. Yes I knew what to expect but was just keen to hear what others had. Did know I would not be the only one who burnt. It is funny how it seems to get worse once treatment has stopped. The radiation oncologist told me that I would be good in about two weeks. I am sure that the pinkness is not as bad as it was. I will continue on with the creams (today I bought Sudocream). I feel lucky that I breezed through radiation without any issues until this. Didn't get that real tiredness but am not sleeping that well so do get tired but not too bad. I am doing most things I always have done so feel lucky. I know there are others in much worse situations as me.

    Hi Ady,

that post rads burns does suck. The same thing happened to my skin. What worked best for me was solugel (very cheap to buy from the chemist) and I put a non stick dressing on it (melolin) The solugel draws all the stickiness out of the broken areas and assists wthatith the healing. I just put it on after my shower in the morning and I held it on using my soft stretchy bra that I was wearing at the time. It just meant that I wore that to bed of a night. It was gone in a couple of weeks.

    Hope th helps, Trace ????????

  • Hi Ady, I  finished my 25th treatment on Feb 22nd on my right side. I had blisters, peeling skin, itchiness, swollen & tender  breast, very reddened entire radiated area, sunburn style stinging in all reddened area along with exhaustion, nerve pain  & nausea. The last 3 weeks of treatment were worst & side effects kept worsening after treatment ended - as they'd explained it would. Thankfully my skin has markedly improved in the last few days. I had been given a couple of different creams/gels for the burns & their pain & itchiness. I was told it would get worse before it starts to improve & I'm def at tge point of it having improved. I know we're all different but that's been my recent experience. It should start to ease soon for you. Thinking of you & wishing you well, Rosetta ???

  • Hi Ady. I finished radiation two weeks ago, I was going really well until about the last 3 weeks of radiation I had 30 days of it . My cancer was in the left side The blisters started under the umpit and under the breast. I had to dress it everyday using parifin cream was very sore then my last week i stared to get what they called radiation dermatitis which resembles large pimple like blisters very very ichy. When I finished radiation the next 2 weeks were the worst blisters bursting and then red raw skin very very sore But with the help of the cream which I kept in the fridge bathing my boob in salt water and try and air it out. it is now down to a few pimple like sores( radiation Dermatitis.).And remember do not use anything with perfume or alcohol

But remember everyone is different and what we have been through you will get pass this

    keep strong

    Dilee

  • I'm 4 years post diagnosis , I had 30 sessions of radiation, I burnt severely changing the dressing four times a day, I kept my creme in the fridge which was lovely and cool when put on. Don't forget the radiation continues to work even when treatment is finished and takes a long time to come out of the system. My burns cleared very quickly I was quite surprised. I did however have pain in my breast for about 2 years especially in the front muscle. All the best adean

  • Hi Ady,

It sounds uncomfortable.  I start my radiation on Tuesday. What you are experiencing sounds very much like what they told me in my education session ie that the radiation side effects like the skin reaction would likely show up towards the end of radiation.  They warned me that the skin side effects could worsen for the few weeks after radiation was completed. Hang in there, sounds as if you are doing all of the right things and that the nursing staff are following up.  Ask lots of questions.  Did you get some written information before you started radiotherapy?  Revisit them and you might be reassured that what you are experiencing is a common side effect of your treatment.
