Breast Reconstruction via Public Health System

I have had a bilateral mastectomy back in April and since completed radiation therapy.

I wanted to go on the waitlist for a breast reconstruction through the public health system. My GP referral was rejected by the public hospital on the basis that my BMI was too high. Apparently my BMI is 44 but the requirement is a BMI of under 33.

Does anyone know any way around this so my reconstruction can be done at the public hospital?
  • Hi kmakm,
Thank you for the information and encouragement,  it really helps.
  • I had a BMI of 34 when this nugget of info first came up. I was told not to gain any weight as if I did they wouldn't operate (I was in the private system). For safety and optimal healing, getting it to 30 would be best they said. Four months later my BMI was below 30. It's bloody hard but you can do it. It was the most effective incentive I've ever had. • Thank you so much Ahnn, that helps. Will definitely look into that.
  • Welcome @Sweets. I don't know about specific BMI requirements of the public hospital system,  however my breast surgeon referred me to a reconstruction plastic surgeon who is willing to do private or public surgery.  They would be able to advise better than the hospital if you need to lose weight. Going on a waiting list would give you a timeframe as well as incentive if you need to lose weight. Everyone is different. Just a thought. Hope it helps. Good luck with your ongoing treatment
