Branded for life
Gday girls, Ive hada break from this site, being busy with appointments. Delighted to FINALLY learn that my treatment doesnt involve chemo. No consolation though. Monday I have 1st radiation session where Im told they mark you & then tattoo. Im not happy. I suppose I have no right to complain seeing other womens problems are far worse than mine & they have to do chemo & lose their hair, but I dont want to be branded like an animal. I loathe tattoos!
For a lowsy 6 weeks of treatment, Im branded for life? Does everyone be like sheep & get tattooed to make radiation easier for the staff? I havent been there yet to understand how difficult the radiation staff's job is if you are not tattooed. Surley there's some alternative like using a waterproof permanent marker.
There must be something wrong with me coz I really do have a problem with being branded for life.

- TanyaMemberHi Jozzy Your body, your life, so if you don't want the tattoos ask the question, I am sure it makes it easier, but easier for them may not be right for you. Only this week I had my sixth surgery and I now have the confidence to ask for what I wanted and had a great experience. I asked for gas before cannula (my veins are bad), I had a pill for nerves, I only took one acrylic nail off (maybe a little vain), I asked for pain killers when I had pain. Anyway enough about me, the point is to stand up and ask the questions, sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised and you really don't know If you don't ask. Good luck and keep us posted. Tan
Just thought I'd also add that my skin did not break down either. I just used the sorborlene I was given morning and night. My skin turned a strange purple/brown colour which has now faded away completely. And like Tonya, I did get a bit tired half-way through as well. Everyone is different though so it's hard to know exactly what to expect. I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

Thanks for your reply Tonya.
Good point you make. Everything seems scary, first time around. The way you describe it sounds horrible but honest. I can imagine it becoming routine after a while too. Amazing what we can cope with when we have to, hey.
I thought aloe vera would be a good idea. I have it growing everywhere it pots. Ive heard Vit E is a proven healer.
Sounds like radiation therapy isnt as strong as Im expecting & that burnt scaring & broken skin is not a definite.
Thanks, Justine
- KashmiaMemberWhilst I was having treatment I wore soft t-shirt bras from target a bit like the wah bra that is advertised on tv .... None of my clothes got ruined if I had a morning appointment I only put a little bit of sorbolene cream on breast area then when I got back to my hotel (I lived 400 km away from treatment so I stayed in Adelaide for 7 weeks) I put heaps of sorbolene on and put a light cotton nighty on and let it soak in so my skin didn't dry out Tracey

It lovely to know there's a good chemist in Tas that makes their own radiation therapy cream. Shame its not in Sydney.
Maybe you could put the details of the chemist on the directory of this site, so others in Tas can find it? Justine

Thank you very much Janet for your reply.
Once of the great things about this site is that you can feel validated. Thank you.
Im in Sydney. I'll ask the staff. I dont want them to wiinge at me but if you managed it in Melbourne surely they can do it in Sydney too. I have a few freckles they can use.
Thats great news.

Thanks for your reply Tracey.
I hear a lot about Sorbolene cream. Many people recommend it, especially hospital staff.
I wonder whether it ruins your clothes?

I had radiation back in 2003 and honestly,I could never even see or find my tat dots. They are a mere pin prick. When you go for your measure up it will be a bit weird cos you lie there while someone draws all over you with texta - like a road map! My boob got very red but my skin never broke down.I would put pure aloe vera gel on straight after the zap. That night I would soak in a warm salt bath, get dried and apply either vit e cream or sorbolene. The staff will advise you what to rub on.It is scary at first but then it just becomes part of your daily routine.Half way through I got abit tired but it wasn't as bad as chemo. Good luck for Monday.

My dots are so tiny I can barely see them now - 6 weeks after final zap.
(I actually asked for a butterfly but was told by the nurse she could only manage little dots !! :P)
They need to be INCREDIBLY accurate with the zapping so the tattoo is a must - you'll understand when you get there. But honestly it's nothing to worry about, juts consider it part of the journey. The zapping is a breeze as paulag said.
We have a lovely chemist here in Tas (homeopathic) who make their own radiation therapy cream. It was fabulous, I used it liberally, and suffered only some redness and no major burns. I was told sorbolene was also good.
best of luck

- KashmiaMemberHi Jozzy, I had my last radiotherapy session June 21st last year and my dots are very feint can hardly notice them :) I had my 1st visit with the radiotherapy nurses on April 12 2012 and they map out the area that is to have the radiation and you get your dots, my 1st actual radiotherapy session was May 7th, For my skin I used kenkay pure sorbolene cream the radiotherapy department gave me and I had no trouble at all with my skin. Good luck with your treatment when it starts Tracey
