Mastectomy - replacement implant

I had a mastectomy with an immediate expander but while in hospital I had a haematoma which resulted in a lot of scar tissue. This scar tissue caused problems for my recovery. I have since consulted two plastic surgeons who both agreed I should have had the scar tissue cleaned out before the expander was put in. Both concluded my implant was also too wide and too hard. I am considering having my implant replaced in the hope of gaining more comfort. Has anyone had any experience with replacement implants - keen to hear your thoughts. Thank you!
  • Hi Helen, strange how things happen, I was diagnosed with a recurrence as my husband was in the midst of having his knee replacement. Hang in there. It wail happen. Sending you a hug.

  • Thank you very much everyone for your really helpful feedback and advice - I really appreciate it. I'm leaning towards having the procedure done again but we've just hit a slight delay with my husband having to have his recent  knee replacement done again as well - hard to believe it could happen to both of us! So we'll get that done first and then move on to my surgery. Thanks once again.
  • Yes that's it........textured surface.......Furry or Fuzzy Brazillians !!!! That's what they're called !  Couldn't tell you if the no/less scar tissue bit is working though.

  • Hi Helen, I personally think that having your implant replaced  for a smaller one would be of great benefit - particularly as you say that your surgeons have both said it is too wide and too hard. I did a bit of reading that went along the lines of if the implant is too wide, too large it may also be too heavy for the breast area and the skin pocket and this can lead to problems down the track. As for textured versus smooth implants a lot of surgeons are using textured implants now to try and stop encapsulation and to stop displacement of the implant, but smooth implants also have their own benefits. I think the thing to keep in mind is that your medical team are stating that it is too wide and unless you have a desire to have larger breasts the comfort factor is going to affect your daily life. Only you can gauge your level of discomfort. So wishing you all the nest with your decision. Let us know what you decide. Xx Cath
  • Hi Helen1951 I had a skin sparing mastectomy with immediate implant recon in 2011. Unfortunately it was decided when I was halfway through chemo that radiation would be a good idea. This caused bad contracture of the muscle & scar tissue. I have actually had my implant replaced I think three times in various surgeries ......all due to contracture & wound healing issues. The actual implant replacement was not a huge issue for me, my problem is contracture. I had scar tissue removed .....the scar capsule that forms around the implant that had contracted. The implant I have now is one that discourages the scar tissue & I'm sorry I can't think of what the difference is, possibly it had something to do with the outside of the implant(?) .......somebody may know. I am happy to answer any questions.
Best of luck with it all.

  • Hi helen1951 I did a quick search of replacement  implant and it  and came up with quite a few results. However lots of them are in the choosing breast reconstruction group which you would need to join to view. If you are already a member and do a search you will be able to view them.  If not and you want to join just click on the groups tab above and click on choosing breast reconstruction and request to join.  Some of the ladies in the group may be able to help if you start a discussion in that group.  Just a bit ;confused, did you go straight to implant or do you have a temporary expander in? I think from what you are saying it was straight to implant. Sorry I  have not had implants.
