Diep surgery recovery
hi everyone
I’m having double mastectomy and diep reconstruction in about 3 weeks and I was wondering if anyone could give some insight into recovery and how they managed once at home from hospital ? Are you able to move around the house yourself and do small things like make a sandwich ?
They have said to expect to be in hospital for 7 nights
Thanks!!

- kmakmMemberAt what stage post-surgery did this happen @nikkid? Thank you for the picture. I'll ring the PS surgeon office on Monday to let them know.
Don't know what a silver dressing is! I shall ask. - Kiwi_AngelMemberOh no @kmakm - hope the antibiotics knock it in the head quickly!!!!!
- nikkidMemberHey Kate, this is not unusual (@melclarity had something similar as did I in a spot on my tummy scar but it is distressing). I’ve attached a pic FYI. See if there is any chance you can get some SILVER dressings on those red weepy bits? The PS nurse should be able to do this for you Monday. It helps with the healing x
- kmakmMemberRecovery has hit a bump. Sections of all my incisions are bright red and weeping, especially the abdominal one. There are also red welts nearby. Of course this has happened on a weekend! So I've been to the big GP clinic I use when I need immediate care.
The GP took a swab of the infection on the belly. Said it was also infected on the right foob, with dermatitis on the left and belly as well.
She gave me a prescription for antibiotics and wants to see me again on Monday. :/ - kmakmMemberI saw my breast surgeon today. He examined my foobs and noticed the hard lumpiness on the right and said it could be some dead fat. Not to worry he added, the plastic surgeon will lipo it out and replace it at the revision surgery. You sure are required to be very patient in this DIEP recon business...
I have a slight suspicion that I may have a bit of cording on the right as well, so my breastcare nurse showed me what to do there.
There was some chat about no guarantees that a recurrence would never happen, and a few other things, and then it was cheerio, see you in six months. Unless something goes wrong, it's over a month before I see a doctor again. It's very weird.
My skin continues itchy and I am still sore at the sides and underneath my foobs, and at the outer stretches of the abdominal incision. I'm looking forward to the pain lessening. Soon I hope. - kmakmMember@"Kiwi Angel" So far so good. They seem pretty good but there's a long way to go. They're still very swollen, and the skin is too, from lymphatic drainage issues. It takes a while for the fluid to work out where to go. My right foob is lumpier & harder and there's still bruising. At this point I'm OK with them but I'm reserving judgement.
- Kiwi_AngelMember@kmakm that’s what I had - the horrible welts!!! R u happy with the foobs???
- kmakmMember@"Kiwi Angel" I had to rip off the dressings covering where the drains had come out. I left them there as long as I could but the irritation was intense. There were raised red welt like markings left on my skin.
Yes, I've seen my foobs! There's no bandages with this operation. They have to have constant access for days to make sure the bloody supply to the new tissue is healthy. I got a nurse to take a photo a few hours after I woke up but the big reveal moment was seeing myself in the mirror when I eventually stood up. - Kiwi_AngelMember@kmakm - I had my pressure bandage left on for about 3 days and the tape was so tight when I took it off to shower this patch of tape had done something to an area of skin and it burnt like a son of a b**ch when I got under the water and have left a little scar. Hope u don’t have that and just feel relief once it comes off. Good luck with the check up - do u get to see your new boobs or have u seen them?? Glad your FIL is doing better and that u seem to be doing well. xoxox
- SisterMemberI'm not allergic to the tape but left on too long sends me crazy.
