Diagnosed after routine Mammogram

Hi all Routine Mammogram mid July then call back. Further mammogram & ultrasound then core biopsy. August 1 first surgery for DCIS only to discover pathology finding infiltrate. Had 2nd surgery the following week to remove 2 lymph nodes which were clear. All the following appointments with Oncologists, then planning for Radiotherapy. I am now 6 treatments from completing this. Being diagnosed with BC, the following tests & treatment has been difficult to come to terms with. Particularly the first month after diagnosis. I also joined the STAR trial by starting Aramidix a week before Radiotherapy. I seem so far to be tolerating this drug so far. Diana

  • Thanks Michelle I finish my Radiotherapy next Wednesday. Can’t wait, the area is getting very itchy and my skin is glowing like a beacon. The creams I use are doing a good job I think. I live at Runaway Bay I wonder where you may live. Diana
  • So glad to hear you are doing so well - it is hard to come to terms with being diagnosed - we all go through a reality check after getting such a shock.

It is so good that your twin sister is clear, and I hope that your daughters will be, also.

I also had my surgery at Pindara, and chemo and rads at the Icon & Genesis centres at Premion.  They were all absolutely suberb.  How lucky were we to have such a cutting edge and integrated team. This must be your last full week of radiotherapy, so time to celebrate next week - another milestone reached!

I am 2.5 years out from final treatment now, and feeling strong and healthy again.  Like Deanne, I have adopted a healthy regimen of diet and exercise to give my body the best possible chance of staying that way.

Keep in touch with how you are going and how your daughters tests come out. Will be thinking of you. Big hug.

    Michelle xx

  • I'm glad that your twin sister was ok. Hopefully that means your BC (like most of us) is not genetic and that will be better news for your daughters too. My younger sister had a mammogram after my diagnosis and was ok. I have been told that my daughters will need to be monitored more closely from the age of 30. I really hope they find out more about what causes BC and how to cure it before they have to worry (they are only 19 and 21 at the moment). There was no family history of BC for me, so I have just made as many healthy changes as I can and keep my fingers crossed that the treatment I had and tamoxifen will keep me cancer-free. I think it is almost harder for our husbands than it is for us to cope with the shock of all this. My husband was a terrific help too and if anything good has come out of this it is that we now appreciate our time together so much more! Hope that everything is good for your daughters with their mammograms and ultrasounds too. Deanne x
  • Thanks Deanne I get about one day a week I have to hit the bed for a few hours. Most of the time I just need my Nanni nap in the afternoon. Once I started Radiotherapy a huge weight was lifted off me as the whole diagnosis was such a shock. I have an identical twin sister, she has had mammogram and ultra sound since my diagnosis hers came back clear. I also have four daughters and they are in the process of having mammograms and ultrasounds I live on the Gold Coast and have had wonderful treatment at Pindara and the Icon & Genisis centre. My husband has been a big help.

  • It IS so hard to come to terms with having BC and needing treatment. That first month is full of waiting and lots of new information and terms that we would rather not need to learn about. You must be looking forward to finishing radiotherapy. Have you felt tired? I am glad that you are finding Aramidix ok. I have been on tamoxifen for almost 12 months now and am doing ok on it. We never expect to find ourselves in this situation but thank goodness that we have access to such terrific health care here in Australia. BCNA has really helped me to feel less alone during my treatment and recovery. (I am on the Sunshine Coast). I hope that the last six sessions of radio go quickly and you are soon feeling strong and healthy again. Take care. Deanne xxx
