    Hi Kate,

It might help if you said what area you are in :)   I haven't had mets or chemo, but the dentist I saw yesterday wanted to know some details of my cancer treatment (ie was my radiation localised?  Had I had chemo?)  He's in the Redlands in Brisbane.

My old neighbour had trouble getting any dentist to do an extraction, not because she had cancer but because she is 87yrs old. She finally got in to an MD medical surgeon and he refused as well! She got really antsy about it and said give me a waiver form and take the bloody tooth out! He did, she signed it, had the tooth out no dramas and went home lol.

I have a friend with bone Mets and she is on denosumab (XGEVA) injections. Being on this when you have a tooth extraction can lead to osteo necrosis of the jaw. Maybe that is why dentists won't do an extraction? Maybe you need to discuss with your oncologist and see if they can explain your options and recommend a dentist too?

Kate I can give you a name of a fantastic oral surgeon in Sydney - not sure where U R based at.

I highly reccomend seeing an oral surgeon as they are just brilliant, get the job done with minimal trauma to the mouth and gums and in a very short amount of time.

Seen one my self in the past and had both husband and mum been seen by them and seriously do not fear it. Worth every cent and then some

    Jel.

Hi I had to have an extraction whilst on denosunab, my oncologist actually suspended the injections for three months whilst my mouth healed, my local dentist referrred me to the Dental hospital in Adelaide as she wanted me treated by a specialist, this all went well and I resumed the denosunab injections which i have now been on for over three years,so long as your dentist is aware of what treatment you are on it should be fine, I even went back to my local dentist as I was having trouble with a mouth ulcer and she shaved a bit of my tooth back for me to help, My oncologist is kept up to date with all my treatment and at the moment my teeth are the best they have ever been, as i am on a disabilty pension my mouth care is looked after by our local dental hospital and for any other treatment she feels i need i am referred to the Adelaide Dental Hospital,I have always been treated resepctfully and am classed as a vulnerable peron in terms of dental care, due to my advanced breast cancer diagnosis, I have always been looked after and have been told to let them know any time that I need dental care.

I have been on denosumab for two years now and have regular dental checkups.  I have had several fillings with and without local injections.  No problems as yet but I am almost certain they will pack me up and send me to the dental hospital if I ever needed an extraction
