A question in regards to groups

Hi Cosette,

Thanks for keeping us up to date as to what the new network will look like. It will certainly be great if it works faster and these new functions work well.

As a group facilitator I have a question.  Will it be possible to search for content within a group?

Thanks

Paula :)

I think this is a good time to talk about groups in general :-)

Groups are getting a big change. Before we talk about that more, let's take a quick look at how groups have been used in the online network.

    (1) The online network now doesn't have a discussion categories. Members have created groups to pose questions about a specific topic. When the question is answered or there wasn't enough interest in the topic, the group became inactive. Examples include Tamoxifen side effects and Declined treatment.

    (2) Some groups are announcement boards for offline groups. Little or no conversations happen in them.

    (3) Some groups are a great resource for members seeking greater peer-to-peer support. Examples of these are the breast reconstruction and secondary breast cancer groups.

We have 151 groups. A handful of them are active.

Our current vision is to create Groups for members seeking greater peer-to-peer support. We also want to ensure that every Group in the online network has an active members facilitating conversations in them. Groups are not intended to be a substitute for discussion topics. They're also not intended to be announcement channels.

Most of the groups are being dissolved. Their content is being integrated into discussion categories. For example, announcements about meetups will appear in Community News and Events.

    The surviving groups are:

    1. Choosing Breast Reconstruction (previously 'Breast reconstruction' online group)
    2. Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer (previously 'Living with advanced/secondary breast cancer')
    3. Christians Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

We can and would create more groups if the need arises.

This is what the main group page looks like. Keep in mind that it's missing its images and design.

Group Facilitators will remain (they're called Group Leaders on the new platform). They'll be able to edit the Group's details, edit, close, and delete discussions (posts). They can edit the original post, but not the comments.

There is a search bar within Groups.

Right now it's returning results from the entire online network. There is an option to search only within Groups, but it's not working properly at the moment. The developers are looking into it.

Hi Cosette, thanks for the information.

Regarding the search function for groups....will it search a specific group?? Looks like it will be groups in general.

Also, what is the search function searching? Is it the body of the posts??

If the current posts are being saved, are the current tags on those posts being deleted??

The new search is very powerful. It returns results with the word anywhere in the post - in the subject line or in the body. It also tells you what category or Group the post is in.

The search returns results for Groups only if you're a member of that Group. In the image above, it says "Social Groups", but that will be replaced with the name of the right group.

There is no group-specific search. The feedback that we've received is that it doesn't matter much where the information lives as long as members can find what they're looking for. And with only three groups, we don't expect that will be a problem.

    • Choosing Breast Reconstruction (previously 'Breast reconstruction' online group)
    • Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer (previously 'Living with advanced/secondary breast cancer')
    • Christians Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

    Thanks for this Cosette,

I can see it will take a bit to get my head around but I'm a bit that way with IT stuff, however once I work it out I am usually great with it :)

With the search example that you used the word DIEP and you used the example "social groups", I take it that if you weren't a member of "social groups" you would not be able to read that but would be advised to join that group if you wanted to read that content?  Did I get that right?

The first time you log in, Paula, you'll get a little tutorial on how to use the forum :-) You'll get the hang of it in no time.

Results from private groups that you're not a member of won't appear at all in your search results.
