A question in regards to groups

I can see it will take a bit to get my head around but I'm a bit that way with IT stuff, however once I work it out I am usually great with it :). 

With the search example that you used the word DIEP and you used the example "social groups", I take it that if you weren't a member of "social groups" you would not be able to read that but would be advised to join that group if you wanted to read that content?  Did I get that right?
