Surgery inbetween chemo?

i have so far completed the 4 AC and 3 paclitaxol I had a ultrasound to monitor progress which showed the main tumour (I had 1 big 1 and 2 Small) has reduced significantly and 1 of the Small has disappeared, but the report also said that there is either a new lesion or the small 1 has moved around due to reduction in main 1. The Med Onc resident (not my consultant) was going to Phone my surgeon to ask what to do but she mentioned maybe pausing chemo, doing the surgery and then finishing off the chemo after recovery...
has anyone heard of it being done like that?
  • Thanks for the update @JoeyLiz. I was thinking of sending a pm to see if any news, was just checking this first.
In answer to your question, I'm going ok. 2 years post treatment, still paranoid, lol, but ok
  • Surgeon called, biopsy was benign so fingers crossed that means lumpectomy!
  • Thanks @lrb_03 scan showed new area isn’t near original clips so core biopsy taken. I see Med Onc on mon so willl hey results then. I had taxol no.6 today! So yes halfway woohoo!!!! How are you?
  • Hi @JoeyLiz. Just thought I'd check in and see what the latest news on scans etc was.  How are you going? You must be past the halfway mark of taxol? Hopefully starting to see the glimmer of chemo ending. Thinking of you
  • That's good to hear, @Joey_36. All those answers sound more than reasonable. That's certainly an advantage with neoadjuvant chemo, being able to see the tumour response, or lack of, and adjust accordingly if needed.
    Take care,
    Lyn
  • Thanks for checking in @lrb_03 I ended up calling my breast care nurse and she followed everything up for me. The surgeon has reviewed the ultrasound images and wants to see me next tues to do his own ultrasound and then chat. But I also spoke to my Rad Onc (who I work with) and she laughed off the surgery inbetween chemo part and said that’s stupid. She says there would be less than 1% chance that a new lesion would pop up during chemo as it would have to have a different histopathology. It’s more likely that due to anatomical changes with the main lesion it’s just the satellite lesion in a new position. Hopefully find out more on Tues :)
  • Hi @JoeyLiz, just checking in to see how you're going? Any update on your treatment? Have you spoken to your surgeon?
    Thinking of you, Lyn
  • Don't trust the resident, speak to the grown ups.
Statistically this is the worst time of year to be in treatment. I've found that out the hard way.
Squeaky clean brand new residents come on board in January and the ones who were previously at the bottom of the food chain move up. This can be a recipe for disaster from a patient perspective, particularly since the head honchos are likely to be away over Xmas.
Ego, fear, uncertainty and exhaustion are all part of the weird process of being inducted into the medical profession. I do feel for the resident docs and none of them should be there without demonstrating they have high functioning brains.  But is not their lives at stake.
Talk to a grown up. Marg
  • I've heard of chemo being suspended when there has been a lack of response, or tumour growth during neoadjuvant chemo. I would continue on with your chemo, and try and see the surgeon yourself to discuss such a big change in your management plan.
I have a friend who had an MRI after 2 of her 3 doses of FEC, which showed a lack of response, so she was then changed and had 4 doses of docetaxol instead of 3. She ended up having a complete pathological response, although that still allows for remaining DCIS, which she had.
    Take care,
    Lyn
