SURGERY COMPLETED NOW FOR THE REST

hello

On July 28th I went for the Hook wire insertion and then straight into the Auburn Hospital for my Bi lateral Breast reduction with lift and Sentinel Node removal.  4 hrs into the surgery Dr Saliba got a call from the Pathologist to say I had Ca. cells in my node. Bummer, as all my scans, ultrasounds etc had come back as negative. So ... she then proceeded to remove 23 nodes from under my left arm and another 2 hrs of OT time.

Post surgery, I was back on the Surgical Ward around 1800hrs and awake. After peeing in a pan twice and was not working well I decided it was time to get up out of bed with my PCA and head to the loo. That was it, I was up and about.

I had lost around 1kg in breast tissue combined from my breasts and now i am a nice B-C cup... coming down from a DD. The drain was a pain in the butt and only last until the following weekend when I was home. So far everything has gone well.. healing is good and the scaring is very good... nipples survived the disconnection and reconnection process.  I was not able to sleep on my side for a few weeks but now find i can for a few hours then have to go back on my back.

So.. nearly 6 weeks post op (Thursday) I will be starting the next part of this not so great journey. Chemo, 6 doses every 3 weeks over 18 weeks all going well and no hiccups on the way. Then the Radiotherapy will start in January for around 16-20 doses instead of the 6 weeks (30 doses) like we first thought... then Tamoxifen will start after that... Im looking at least 6 months of treatment from now and that is without any problems arising. Fingers crossed.

Fluorouracil
Epirubicin                             3 doses of these together for 9 weeks (3rd weekly)
Cyclophosphamide
and then
Docetaxel                            3 doses of this as a single doses for 9 weeks  (3rd weekly)

Dr Saliba will see me in 3 months and then again after Radiotherapy... then in 18 months we will start talking about lippo and filling in the boobs to pump em back up again...

I have already started looking at a wig to use for work ... scarves are good but i just need something to make me feel a little normal while doing my job, as I will be loosing my hair very soon with the chemo being a little aggressive.

Ofcourse, I dont want to start this part of the journey but I know the next 40 years looks better and I will just wipe off this time of my life.

  • Cancer tumours & cells are such sneaky buggers aren't they?!

My most recent breast tumour wasn't detected by mammogram or ultrasound. Specialist even thought the fine needle biopsy looked good & gave me the all clear - until it came back positive. During the lumpectomy surgery everything looked good until the pathology came back with large areas of DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in the surrounding tissue which means more surgery to remove it. Again none of this showed on the ultrasound. Being B cup I won't much left at this rate!

Glad to hear you're recovering Ok from the breast reduction surgery & all the best with the chemo & radiation :)

  • I was keen to start as so wanted to be sure we got it all. One never knows if course. Sad about the nodes. How many were positive? So glad surgery went well.
