Still in pain from Lumpectomy/ Sentinal Biopsy
Hi everyone, it's been 17 days today since I had the Lympectomy and the Sentinel Biopsy and I am still very tender under the armpit, but what is upsetting me more is the burning and tingling sensation in the left breast, not just near the incision either. It seems to be so sore all over the breast and I saw the nurses last week and they said there's still abit of swelling but no infection.
I haven't taken Panadol all the time as it will aggravate my diverticulitis condition, but I am getting so fed up with this. I am seeing the surgeon and other specialists on Tuesday to get my full pathology results and treatment plan and I will let them know that the pain hasn't eased off at all, if anything I feel it's worse and I am very upset.
My gut feeling is that I have an infection there. I know one thing for sure is if the pain doesn't improve then I won't be ready to do a treatment plan of any sort until this eases off. Have others had this pain for nearly 3 weeks after surgery?

Hi all,
It/s now nearly a year later ... how are you all doing? I'm currently experiencing the same sort of symptoms within a similar context.
Cheers

Hi Christine, your pain sounds very much what I have been having for nearly 2 weeks now. I saw the doctors and the physio yesterday and I don't have cording but they think I have Lymphoedema of the left breast. I don't have it under the armpit which is the most common, but most of my left breast especially the nipple area is affected. I have been doing my exercises daily so not sure why it happened, but a fluid build up can happen. They won't give me antibiotics as they say there is no infection as such. They showed me how todo afew massages to help drain the fluid from the breast. So I started those this morning along with the usual other exercises that we all have todo post surgery.
I haven't received my treatment plan yet as they're still doing afew more tests but I know that radiation is a given although I was asked to start the Tamoxifen from today whilst waiting for the rest of my treatment plan. I have oestrogen receptors so I have to take this tablet as I also have rheumatoid arthritis. So I am researching this medication today before I go off to the pharmacist.
I am very happy to hear that you are doing so much better after the aches and pains and that you have finished radiotherapy. I have yet todo any of this and I am quite nervous especially with the pain I am having with the left breast now. I am assuming that radiotherapy will aggravate the condition and pain more.
I really just wish to be given my treatment plan so I can finish everything and get on with my life. I have taken 4 weeks off work and it looks like I have to take more time off. The nurses gave me a compressor, boob tube to wear with my surgical bra and say it will help with the Lymphoedema in the breast. I hope so.
Take care

Hi Purplegirl, we must have had our Lumpectomy's about the same time. The pain is worse now for me nearly 3 weeks later than the week I had the Lumpectomy, and the Sentinal Biopsy, and like you, I also have been having back and shoulder blade pain too. Not sure what is causing this but I have spoken to my breast care nurses already on 2 occasions and each time they say no infection. Hope the antibiotics are helping with your infection? I am seeing my specialists on Tuesday for treatment plans and I will insist they look into it because the pain is at times so awful that I just sit down and try to relax.. Hope you feel better very soon especially now that you are on antibiotics and all the very best with your treatment. Hopefully I will get some medication too because I am convinced I have an infection of some sort. It can be so fraustrating because I don't want to delay any treatment plan but if I have an infection then I woul prefer not to start anything until it clears up.
Take care

Hi Tonya, I don't have a temp although I get afew hot flushes every now and then. Not sure about fluid because I don't have any swelling under my armpit but you never know. My whole left breast is now very sore and tingling and the nipple is very tender this week as well. The nurses saw me about 5 days ago and said that its not an infection. I am going to ring them up tomorrow morning and see if I can see someone about it, otherwise they may say to wait until Tuesday as that's when I will be coming back for all pathology results and treatment plan with the oncologists too. My chest has been abit painful too although my right breast is fine. I might ask for an ultrasound too Tonya. I am confused and abit upset that I have this pain which I feel is getting worse. I somehow expected to feel better 3 weeks down the track from surgery and now getting ready for a treatment plan. Thanks very much for your advice Tonya. Much appreciated.

Hi Deanne, yes it will be good to finally hear of a treatment plan but I have felt very anxious all week. I know it's normal to feel very nervous but because I have other ailments I worry that medications will flare up my other health conditions, especially if I have todo chemo. But the pain in my left breast just hasn't eased up at all since surgery 3 weeks ago, and the breast care nurses felt that it was normal and although there is some swelling there is no infection. But when you feel the pain is worse and now even the nipple is painful well you can't help but worry. Lets' hope I get some good news on Tuesday as far as my pathology results go. Thanks Deanne.
Take care,

Hi Trish, thanks for your lovely comments. I have recently started wearing the post op bra to bed too but I find it very uncomfortable, but I am still persevering with it
I don't seem to have swelling under the armpit, although it's sore and tender, but my left breast is burning pretty much everywhere especially the nipple too. My incision was nowhere near the nipple but now apart from the burning there is tingling and even some numbness. The pain radiates abit to my back too. I thought the first week after surgery would be the most painful but honestly it's been from the 2nd week onwards. I will bring this up with my medical specialists on Tuesday when I go for my appt and see what they have to say. Trish, I hope you continue to feel better too. Look after yourself great that the massage and physio are working. I guess it all takes time and patience.
