post mastectomy wound infection

What else can you do to feel better (I feel horrid!) when I have a post mastectomy (16 days post-op now) wound infection? I have just started antibiotics - had to fight a bit with the Hospital in the Home Drs to get the Antibiotics, but Surgeons ended up over ruling them on my side :)
I still have 1 drain in and plan is for it to stay in until Friday (6/5/16).
I am so over all of this!!!!!

  • Hi, I also got an infection post-mastectomy - although nearly 6 weeks post-surgery as my wound reopened. Was on antibiotics for a really long time (admitted into hospital for IV antibiotics, then on Baxter bottles and also oral for awhile) so I know how you feel.

Just take things slowly...small steps. Getting drain out is a good step forward! And totally agree with the comments re. fresh air, sunshine, cafes. All of that helped me just take it day by day.

And continue to 'fight' for what you know is best for you.

That is not fun, I hate drains, and having an infection to boot sucks big time. If you feel that you need more antibiotics at the end of your current script, be vocal about it. Hoping that your drains come out on the 5th.

Sending you a big cuddle, Trace

  • I found sunshine and fresh air did wonders for me when I was feeling down post surgery. I too developed a bit of an infection which got me down as I kind of expected it all to go smoothly and realising there was an infection day 4 post surgery got me really down.

Simply going outside grabbing a bite a sitting in the park or on the beach did wonders. Short walk or simply sitting on a park bench watcjing the world walk by was so relaxing... I think the worst thing is being indoors and on your own...

Now that you are on antibiotics it will clear up quickly - just hang in there :)

  • Hi so sorry you are having a bad trot. Try and go for a short walk outside, not sure what the weather is like where you are. I always found a walk outside helped or go and have a nice cuppa at a coffee shop , I always found the house closes in on me and seeing others helped me. Hang in there it is such a roller coaster.

Hope you are feeling better soon
