lobular BC, no clear margins post lumpectomy, surgeon advises Masectomy, any advice?

Just had lumpectomy results, not able to find clear margins, and 4 out of five nodes positive, now have to decide which masectomy? Skin sparing, nipple sparing or just plain old normal?
Still have to have Rads, how do you decide?

  • As @onemargie says, speak to your doctor and be clear about what the pros and cons of each are.  I have been in a similar situation to you - ILC partial, then a complete shock to find it was twice the expected size and 3 nodes involved so immediately back in for mastectomy and axillary dissection.  IIdidn't have a choice - the cancer was so large and I'm fairly small.
I I go down the path of recon, it will be at least 12 months after op and will be some sort of flap. I haven't yet decided and I'm also waiting on genetic results to make a decision about the other side. Be aware that radiation affects the skin and has some repercussions with reconstruction.  Are you having chemo?
You make wish to join the recostreconstr group on this site. Lot's of women with different stories and some very honest accounts of what to expect.  Keep us posted. Take care.
  • Hi there @Spillsy. Get all your options together get the advice from your team then sit down and think about what you want to do. I took both mine off for several reasons but did i the plain old normal one as you liked to call it. Are you having a recon at the same time ? That might help you decide.  I guess if it was me I’d take the one that has the best outcome for you.

If you live in qld and want a recon I highly recommend you have it done immediately if you can as the wait times up here are up to 5 years which I wasn’t told about until after my surgery. Unless you go privately of course. But this will depend on the type of treatment you have as radiation plays a part in the recon decision making process.  Big hug. Margie xx
