Is this normal after double mastectomy?

Had bilateral mastectomy 5 April 2018. Sentinel node biopsies too. 1 drain each side. 2nd drain removed 12April. Should I be concerned by tightness and soreness across my chest and into the underneath and down upper arms. Appears to be increasing each day rather than decreasing. This is not at wound sites. Above that across chest and into arms. Wound sites no problem. Been doing my exercises. But do live alone without any family support. Might it be that I've needed to do too many other things and injured the muscle across chest to arms? Pectoralis? Stiff and sore. Or is this normal and it will improve? I've been taking only paracetamol since surgery. Maybe this is normal and simply that I did not expect it.

  • @goingdancing I only had a single mastectomy but was plagued by muscle tightness across chest (along the scar) and down that side, even with doing my exercises regularly.  I also had some web cording.  A couple of sessions with a lymphoedema physio and some laser therapy and I'm close to full movement.  (I did check with my surgeon first, though, for a reccomendation).
  • Primek thanks. Shall see how I am tomorrow morning. I suspect that since review is on Tuesday breast care nurse may wish I wait until then. But if I'm more concerned tomorrow, shall contact them. But my nurse has gone in leave. I feel somewhat reassured by others comments here. I may have overstretched when I returned home from hospital morning after afternoon surgery and had to access keysafe to get in my house. My lift to hospital ended up with my house keys and I returned home with volunteer service. Comedy of errors that day which I survived. But no comparison to survivors on this site, I know.
  • I think this would  be normal. I had reconstruction also so different. The tightness is possibly part of the healing and why continuing to stretch is important. But...please speak with your breast care nurse tomorrow just to be sure it's normal. The would can be checked etc.

Is there redness or heat suggestive of infection? If so...a GP appointment quick  smart. Kath x
  • Allyjay. Thanks. Hopefully what I'm feeling is what you felt and it improved over time. Surprised me because the discomfort with it only developed past 3 days. Prior to that was ok - only hassle was juggling bottles and drains. They were removed and I scored a shower. Whooppe Have review Tue 17th. Was going to drive myself. Probably could but by then may be too sore to reach parking ticket on boom gate. Create a sensation in car park. Catch a taxi instead I think. Thanks
  • @goingdancing, I also had a bilateral mastectomy almost a year ago. I had a feeling of great tightness right across my chest for at least a month thereafter. It felt as if I was wearing a really tight bra. Also quite a bit of upper arm and shoulder soreness. Remember, aside from the surgery itself, which causes a lot of trauma to underlying muscles and so on, there is the position that you are placed in for the surgery. This alone would result in a lot of muscle tenderness from being in an unnatural position for a few hours. You are only ten days post surgery, and it will improve. Having said all that, if you are truly concerned, and think that there is more to it than this, then please attend your hospital for a check up. Better safe and reassured, than worried on your own. Sending the biggest hug. ((( hug ))).
