Is this normal after double mastectomy?
Had bilateral mastectomy 5 April 2018. Sentinel node biopsies too. 1 drain each side. 2nd drain removed 12April. Should I be concerned by tightness and soreness across my chest and into the underneath and down upper arms. Appears to be increasing each day rather than decreasing.
This is not at wound sites. Above that across
chest and into arms. Wound sites no problem. Been doing my exercises. But do live alone without any family support. Might it be that I've needed to do too many other things and injured the muscle across chest to arms? Pectoralis? Stiff and sore. Or is this normal and it will improve? I've been taking only paracetamol since surgery.
Maybe this is normal and simply that I did not expect it.

- kmakmMemberSo good to hear! Enjoy that cider :)
- primekMemberGreat news.
- goingdancingMemberI'm so lucky. Surgeon and pathology review today. They did discover more issues in my dense breasts. But not invasive, sentinel nodes clear, no radiotherapy, no chemo. Could have hormone therapy but risk so low I'm not doing it. So I'm so grateful that Breastscreen picked up the anomaly and that only because it was in a position where was seen in my dense breasts on mammography. So I need to do my exercises (physio today has supplied mire) and recover from surgery. When I consider the journeys that others are enduring I feel humbled by my good luck. Gosh I'm going to celebrate with a can of Apple Cider.
- goingdancingMemberSister - good to hear was piece of a chicken. I can ditch my mental image and stop laughing now. So busy day here. Silver Chain visited to set up services. Been showered. Surgeon via my phone call to hospital nurse has ok'd me to take Proxen tonight. Volunteer nurse has organised ambulance car to take me to review appt. Hoping this is seromas pressing on nerves. So tomorrow shall learn the road ahead. Meanwhile eating wonderful grapes and figs delivered by a friend.
- SisterMemberWas just some schnitzel - turned out well, too. There's two different types of cording - one looks and feels like a cord - there is also something called axillary web cording (??) which is what i have and is kind of spread out across the area as well as have some strong ropey bits. Honestly, laser therapy by the professionals does wonders, chicken bashing notwithstanding.
- goingdancingMemberThanks for your responses. Thing is I felt I was moving forward until Sat morning when whatever this is started to set in. That's normal. Things like to flare weekends! That's when things like a tooth abscess declare themselves. And yes my own research brought up cording. In theory I may be able to see it or feel cording but it's both sides and difficult for me to see or feel. Doesn't help to have saggy upper arms from big weight loss years ago. Now getting occasional stabbing under right armpit. Shall phone breast care nurse this morning when they arrive at office. But review at hospital tomorrow anyway. Sister - unsuspecting chicken and you lol. Punching a pillow may have hurt you too, but I think chicken more satisfying. But I do have image of whole chicken and rolling pin. What's the recipe?
- SisterMemberI should qualify my earlier post...I took my frustrations out with a rolling pin on some unsuspecting chicken last night and the muscles are giving me some grief but hopefully will be back to normal soon.
- ZoffielMemberHey @goingdancing . Some people develop a condition called cording post surgery. It feels a bit like there are guitar strings running through your armpit to your arms or chest. Its a random thing and no one seems to know exactly what causes it or even what the very obvious physical symptoms actually are. Anyway, it's common. And revolting. And it may not be the problem anyway. Gosh, that was helpful, wasn't it.... Not.
Get hold of your nurse if things aren't better today . You might need to get a referal for some physio later to help loosen things up a bit, it's early days for you still, just take it easy and keep notes about what is going on--it makes it easier to describe time frames . Mx
