High Temp & Aches

Hello my pink sisters, I came down with the shivers & shakes today. Took my temp & it was 38.8 deg. I rang my breast care nurse & she said go straight to GP as an infection might be starting. Saw GP & Have been put on antibiotics & Panadole every four hours. I feel like I am getting the flu. Should mention that my last 2 drains from my bilateral mastectomy came out this morning. Within 10 minutes I went down hil. Has any of my pink sisters had a similar experience? How long should I wait before heading to emergency. Adrianne

  • Glad they figured out the source of the infection and pain. Rest up and hope you're feeling much better very quickly.

  • Thanks for update and glad it all got sorted for you -not glad you had to have more surgery though. You poor love, must be so sore under the arm- a 7cm cyst is BIG! There always seems to be hiccups along the way of the bc journey.Hope it's all behind you now and that you'll be home soon.

  • Hi my pink sisters, I thought I should up date you all. Saw GP & got antibiotics which did not help, so @ 7pm of to hospital emergency. Emergency were great, listed to my explanation , took blood & urine tests & put me on I V Antibiotics. Temp kept climbing to 39.6 degrees. Kept in observation overnight & transferred to ward next day. An x-ray was taken & then a CT Scan, which showed a 7cm cyst. Finally an answer to the high temps @ tightness under left armpit & into left side. So Thursday I went back to surgery for incision & drainage. Woke up that afternoon & pain had subsided. Antibiotics changed & I am now feeling a bit better & my temp is stable under 37. Should be heading home on Monday. Thanks for all your kind words. Regards Adrianne
  • Hi Adrianne,

You can speak with an oncology nurse by calling the Cancer Council on 13 11 20. They can provide you with advice about whether you need to go to a hospital.

    All the best

  • How wonderful it is to get those drains out. I remember going into my bilateral node clearance two weeks after my bilateral masectomy with one of my drains still in as I ended up with an infection and it wasn't removed till my second surgery when it was replaced with another. I think if I was you I would be going to the hospital if your fever continues or you feel yuk in yourself as you really need to be so careful. I know its a drag to sit and wait but if you do go and you still have hair as you havnt had chemo ? Try wearing a scarf to the hospital as you will get processed through emergency much quicker. My oncologist told me that little trick Look after yourself. Don't let any if the doctors send you home if you still feel you should be admitted. A young doctor told me I was anxious about my second chemo and that's why I was feeling out of breath. He said you are fine now so I'm sending you home. I knew I wasn't well so demanded a nurse get me another doctor. I could hardly talk I was that breathless. I was quickly diagnosed with bilateral clots on my lungs and spent more than a week in hospital Trust your own gut as you know your body better than anyone Keep us updated Mel xxx

  • Thats doesnt sound good. No harm in getting checked out.

I raced back to the hospital just the following day after being discharged, was nothing to worry about in the end, but if it was I was in the right place.
