Fluid buildup after lumpectomy

Hello

I had my lumpectomy on Aug 4th and over the last 2 weeks my breast is quite painful from fluid building up.My surgeon told me that he could put in a drain if I wanted to but that the fluid would dissipate after a while. Im keeping a good eye out for any red patches in case of infection.  Im keen for the fluid to go away on its own without a drain but can anyone please help out with ideas on hot or cold pads for relief? Or should I just take panadol? Or should I head back to the surgeon or GP for assistance?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi adrienne

I had my lumpectomy in December last year & still have some fluid & tenderness.

I agree with Kate, it does take a while. I think it can take up to a year ( I think someone mentioned ) to dissipate.

I think it's just a normal part of healing, but obviously, if yours is really concerning you, check it out.

    hope this helps ??

  • Hi Adienne.....

I had a lumpectomy in January this year and I still have some fluid at the wound site so it does take awhile to go away and I still get pain there less as time goes on....so it will dissipate in time ...hope this helps

    take care Kate ??
