Double Mastectomy with Y shaped closures

I was diagnosed with DCIS and had a double mastectomy on 14/4/16 with Y shaped closures instead of the normal straight lines. My surgeon said he did this because of the original size of my breasts as well as the condition of my skin, which was/is very fragile due to long term Prednisolone use (For severe asthma and Crohn's Disease).
I am hoping to get in touch with others who may have had this same type of closure.

  • I've had drainage, twice one side and once the other, I need another one. They got about 85mls each time

They can give you a local anaesthetic before and I have lots of numbness so it doesn't hurt :)

  • Have you had to have any of the seromas drained? I am scared of that, they have told me it wont hurt if they go through the scar line, but I don't believe them. :(

  • Thanks. It does all make sense. And thanks for sharing. :)

  • I found the pain quite minimal after about three weeks. I have had problems with seromas still

  • Yes diffetent procedures ...mine look like an upside down T. I believe the Y shaped incision mastectomy is done to prevent dog ears occurring as big breasts start from under your armpit and without the breast weight it just sits there. I have a bit if this even with reconstruction. I would imagine all mastectomies are painful. ..even 3 weeks later regardless of incision shape. Because of reconstruction  also I was in quite a lot of pain for 6 weeks and still need pillow support in bed even now at 12 weeks.

  • different then, I have no reconstruction done.
Did you get much pain with yours?

  • LOL, you are unsure of what I mean and I am unsure of what you mean. :)
Mine each are like a Y on its side with the open end (top) of the Y pointing into my armpit. So one each way. Does that help?

  • I had a bilateral  mastectomy and commenced reconstruction same op. Because of my large breasts my scars are like that of a breast reduction minus nipples as I chose to have a much smaller bust post surgery. Unsure if this is what you  though.
