Double Mastectomy and Reconstruction
Hi
I had a double mastectomy with reconstruction on 24 September. Prior to surgery I had 12 weeks of chemotherapy.
I would like to return to work at some stage. How long should I take off work.
Many Thanks.

Hi Milva - some EXCELLENT advice from mum2jj
Yep, everyone recovers at different rates .... definitely put your questiuon past your surgeon & even your BC Nurse too.Your wounds really need to have all fully healed - so if you CAN afford to have more time off to fully recover - you don't want to compromise your recovery by going back too early.
Or maybe start back part-time initially - just to see how you go. Some find that the 'chemo fog brain' doesn't allow them to function as efficiently as before the treatment ....
Golly gosh - that was only 3 weeks ago! It sounds like you've had a great recovery from the chemo tho!
take care & make haste slowly xx

HiMilva ,
Great question. The short answer is everyone is different. Depending on the type of reconstruction you had. I had a TRAM flap reconstruction (similar to a DIEP). I had 6 weeks off work and then went back only a couple of days a week. I’m lucky I work part time. My job does involve a lot of time on my feet as well. If you have a desk job you could maybe go back a bit earlier. It also depends on your energy levels after the chemo. Has your Dr suggested any amount of time frame. I definitely would not rush it if you can afford a bit more time off. Sometimes it is nice t go back though as it brings a sense of normality back into your life. Take your time, listen to your body and don’t rush things if you can.
sending you a hug.
