Back home

That is the mastectomy over & done with, although I have been having trouble with the drains probably due to reaching the arm pull above the hospital bed, they seem to have settled down now I am home & only using the arm for the exercises I've been given. I am having a little pain today for the 1st time since the op, It feels like a dragging pain around the scar but this would probably be normal & am also leaking a little bit from the scar. I have to go back to the hospital on Sat/Mon/Wed/Fri for drain bottle change & will receive a physio appointment by mail to go to mastectomy physio sessions.

I was surprised that they let me home at lunch time the day after as I had a PM surgery. I can honestly say the procedure was not as bad as I thought it would be.

Now the waiting game begins for the path results of the node biopsies.

  • Great to hear that you are home and recovering. I also just had my mastectomy a week ago and just got home yesterday. I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and was discharged with 2 drains . Feels much better to be home and in my own bed. Hope you are recovering well and get good news from your oncologist at your next visit. All the best to you .

  • Thank you all for your comments.

I have just had a phone call advising me of the follow up appointment, which is Thursday next week.

I have the 1 drain bottle & the cloth drain bag, if I don't have it round my neck, I forget it's there too.

I did have a problem with the shower today & next time I will use a smaller towel.

Wishing you all well as we plod along together & sending love & hugs to you. xxx

  • Yes, they get you out of hospital quick but to be honest you would rather be home than in a hospital. ??

I had two drains for a week. A few issues with them leaking which is not a nice feeling to wake up to soaking wet pyjamas! Turns out one of my home nurses had shut off a valve to the bottles and so the fluid had to have somewhere to go. I also had a little bag which I carried them around with around my neck and used to sleep with. I found it a lot easier. Only problems I encountered was getting dressed and undressed with the blooming things! Still, it's not for very long.

definitely keep up with Physio. It will get you back to some normality. I developed a haematoma after the op, which was like having an egg sitting under my arm all the time. Massage and Physio seemed to help.

but like you I found the mastectomy wasn't an issue really. I had to have chemo first so anything after that was ok!

    hope all goes well.

  • Hi Eileen, so glad you are home and that surgery went well. Seems we spend so much time waiting..... after mammogram, after biopsy, after surgery...waiting for what comes next. Its really hard to wait, but a good opportunity to recover and build strength. Hope the news is good on your path results, Tracey

  • Good to hear you are doing well. I had a little tie around the neck cotton bag to put my drain bags in and I kept it on all the time, even at night while sleeping so I didn't accidently lay on the lines or get caught up in them.

  • Glad to hear you are home Eileen....recovery is always better there!

Drains are a pain! but the time will go quickly and it'll be out!

love and light for easy recovery and beautiful days....

    -Tracy

  • Good to hear you are home, I always think most people are happier at home. I always forgot I had drain bags until I could hear them bumping along behind me. Take time to rest xx
