What a pain in the.......... Arm!

Hi All, just thought I'd ask about neuralgia.

the nerve in my armpit has been removed, as a result the other nerves are trying to repair so I've got  this intense burning feeling from my shoulder to my elbow. Think sunburn times 50 million! It's so painful, I can't even stand my clothing  touching it. It's hard because I need to move, but the minute I do it wakes up and gives me grief! The surgeon said it should settle.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance

  • Thanks KJ!

I tried the ice pack and it worked. While i know I shouldnt be in too much pain, I don't really do well with pain killers, i have a heart condition too! so i tend to leave them till my absolute last resort.

    Thanks for your advice!

Love and light for beautiful days

  • Thanks for the advice Adean.

Tried the ice pack and it did work for a while so I'll definately be doing it again!

Yes my surgeon apologised to me too, he said he had no choice but to remove the entire nerve from under my arm. He did say if it bothered me too much, especially through chemo, he could give me something for it. But i think I'll be having enough stuff being pumped into me, so the ice pack will become my friend!

Surgery, treatment and all approaches have definitely come a long way, that's for sure! My Mum woke up and her breast was gone (1979),She was 31... that's just how they did things back then.

I guess if this bitch is going to pay you a visit, this day and age is a good time, the tech, the treatments, the support are second to none.

    Thanks again!

Say Hi to your Mum, what a Champion!

  • I had something similar after surgery - the inside of my upper arm felt like the skin was being peeled off every time I moved my arm. I was pretty awful.

When i told my surgeon she gave me s drug called Lyrica to treat nerve pain. Whilst the drug can make me a bit fuzzy headed, it was worth it to get rid off that torturous sensation. Ask your doctor directly for pharmaceutical assistance. It's not fair you should have to suffer uneccassarily.

    Good luck xo

  • Oh yes I remember that one yes  sometimes its like electric shock ,use a gel freezer pack but be careful not to use it to long and ensure you wrap it in a towel, and keep up the exercises, that pain I remember the surgeon apoligizeing saying it was her fault as she just wanted to get the beast. it does go away but you will continue to experience weird feelings for a long time, my mum who is now 80 had bc at 35 and said she still gets pains every now and then. You should see her scars my goodness surgery has come such along way, but look she is still here.Thinking of you Adean

  • Thank you Tracey! Yes pain killers don't do a thing except knock me out! I'll try the ice pack ..... Thanks again

    ???????

  • Hi Trace, I had neuralgia post op and then neuropathy from chemo. No pain killers would touch it but ice packs were sheer bliss. Seems to numb the nerve and lasts for a couple hours, then put it on again. Hope you get some relief, Tracey??
