Tamoxifen. So Worried

Hi everyone.

Had a checkup today with my onc and now have Tamoxifen in my hot little hands.

Im trying to find the courage to start it but im so scared. Im scared of the side effects and how it will effect my life from here on in.

Im scared of how to cope with the side effects especially with intimacy with my husband :(

How have you all faired?

  • Hi Jodie. I've had the same experience as Robyn. Just hot flushes which seem to get worse if I drink too much coffee or alcohol but otherwise completely manageable. I also gained a bit of weight which I would like to blame on the meds but I think really it's because of all the banana banana bread I ate while on medical leave!!

  • I am on Tamoxifen as you know, and apart from the hot flushes, that are easing now, there is NOTHING else to tell you ! No dryness, nothing! My oncologist told me to give it about 3 months to settle down,if I did have side effects, but honestly Jodie,it's just fine. You can do it...look what else you have done!! :) Big hug xxxRobyn .I should say, that for the first  2 or 3 days after taking it,I felt a bit nauseous, but I honestly think that it was my anxiety causing that, not the Tamoxifen!

  • Please don't take what this as gospel.  But someone posted that their oncologist had eased them into their hormone medication by taking only a part for some days, and working up to full dose.   So it wasn't such a shock to the system.  I wrote it down somewhere because I wanted to mention it when I get up to that stage.

I also found a book in my local library today, called 'Breast Cancer Answers: Practical Tips and Personal Advice from a Survivor' by Judy King (Publisher New Page Books).  She has tips & strategies for dealing with all the usual possible side effects of treatment, includes sexual matters.   Just looked it up on Amazon.   Interesting Customer Review at the bottom:
