Tamoxifen and menstruation.

I feel like I'm about to get my period, been on tamoxifen 20mg about 18 days, had an implanon removed 2 days before starting tamoxifen. Period symptoms very specific, swelling, tight lower abdominals, tight lower back, stiff lower back and hips, legs ache, feel constipated and slightly nauseous. Is it normal to get a period on tamoxifen? I am concerned because my breast cancer is eostrogen and progesterone receptor positive.

  • My period stopped within 2 months on chemo and then went straight to zoladex and then exemastane after radiotherapy.  No periods since.  Am 42.  I think the zoladex stops the periods.
  • I stopped taking the pill one day and started on tamoxifen the next six months ago. I had a period straight away, then nothing for 3 months, then a heavier, longer period than I would normally get, and nothing since then. Unfortunately I think if you’re pre-menopausal there’s no way of knowing if you’re going to get regular periods, none at all or totally erratic ones.
  • Ive been on tamoxifen for two and a half years, had regular periods up untill 4 months ago and now i get some spotting on time and then it comes late,a week or so.this time its been a few weeks.is this what its like when periods stop whilst on the drug or is it menopause coming?im 44yrs old
  • @rosehaven I think it depends on your age as in where you are in terms of menopause and how far away that is. I was on Tamoxifen for 4yrs from age 43, I had a period every month but it was quite light and only last about 4days. In 2015 I had a recurrence and pulled off Tamoxifen, had treatment Chemo no rads as I had that 2011 and now on Arimidex. So I think it sounds normal. :) Oh but thrown into menopause in 2015 from chemo I'm 48..so no period uuugh which is worse I feel LOL and feel this is where the weight comes from menopause lol. • Hi Rosehaven, I've been on tamoxifen for 5 months now and still get pre-period symptoms without the period - one good thing is apart all the other symptoms I have stopped getting a monthly migraine and now just get a low grade headache for a couple of days - BONUS!!!!! Mine is also both Eo+ and PR + .
  • I stopped having my period when I started on the tamoxifen, then I had one about 3 months later and then none again.
  • Hi @rosehaven
As you have only been on it 18 days your oestrogen levels mightn't be low enough yet.
I was started on exemestane & zolodex injections but i still had a cycle so was changed to tamoxifen.
if you do get your period- let your oncologist know.
I'm still having blood tests to check my hormone levels- still producing a small amount of oestrogen.
    Kind regards
    anne
  • Hi Rosehaven, 18 days isn't long. I've been on Tamoxifen for 18 months and have had light spotting and the period coming symptoms that you've mentioned. Write some notes so you can speak on fact at your next GP or Oncology review appointment or for peace of mind speak with your Breast care nurse.
Take care our bodies in my view  say "what the..." are you doing to me
