Side effects after treatment 1

I had my first three weekly treatment last Monday and wondered if there is some information about what side effects I can expect when. For example, do I only feel nauseous and need that medication for the first few days or should I continue taking it before meals for the whole three weeks? Will tiredness, etc, get less after the first week or stay the same? I know everybody is probably different but I'd love to know what to expect!

  • Oh I agree that  for everyone there are minor differences and certainly weekly taxol is different again. I wasn't go to list my woefully long list of side effects but (as you would have been asking about them by now if you had  those ) just a quick quide of the worst days and recovery cycle.
  • I know a lot of advice is to eat well and I am a healthy eater but some of that went by the wayside with chemo I got a real fixation for pasta. I think because it was easy to eat and nice and soft on the mouth. Really whatever helps you get through it.  I found paw paw and watermelon was the bomb as well.
  • Thank you. Wise words! I'll go out and grab some icy poles. I admit I've enjoyed a couple of yummy Weiss bars!
Will take it all on board. :)
  • @janinehumph   I found day 3 to day 10 was the worst for me.  Like Kmakm I was on TC chemo.  I found that after each round it took just a little bit longer to bounce back.  I also found keeping a diary at home useful  for recording nausea, fatigue and what I managed to eat each day.  Don't be shy in letting your team know if you have a lot of  nausea or have other medical issues because they will adjust medication to help you get through the chemo easier.  All Of my meds I took at home and pre meds before the TC infusion were changed after my second round and it made a big difference. Hang in there and take each day at a time and be kind to yourself.  Don't forget the ice poles on days you just feel like rubbish or a bit of cold pineapple does wonders.  Big hug  xxx
  • And side effects can be cumulative too. My fatigue got progressively worse with each round, as did my hands, blood pressure (low) & the effect on my heart. I was on TC.
  • Dear @janinehumph, I found it very helpful to keep a diary, noting side-effects on each day in a cycle. PrimeK has described a typical pattern well, but everybody is a bit different. For example, I missed the nausea completely, but was whumped pretty badly with hand foot syndrome. Also the diary helped me to talk to doctors or nurses about how things were going. Best wishes from jennyss in Western NSW
  • Thank you! That is fantastic to know!! I got handouts but was hoping for more specific info, which you have supplied.
  • The nausea is normally only for around 5 days so you can start seeing how you feel without the tablets now. Your fatigue should improve in week 2 and you'll start to feel almost normal week 3 all ready for the next round.
You'll find your scalp start getting itchy and tender around day 12 and probably start shedding hair a few days after that.
Days 10  to 12 is when your neutrophils are at lowest so best to avoid anybody sick and crowded places on that time...at least this tound. You'll probably have a blood test to check that soon and hext round have a white cell booster injection to reduce your infection risks.
Did they give you handouts about treatment and things to look for etc?
  • Sorry to hear you are feeling crook, @janinehumph  - I am guessing you are talking about chemo?   Can you give a bit more info on what regime you are on?  What surgery you've had - then I am sure that some who've had the same treatment will jump on!
