Seroma

Hi, I have recently had two breast cancer operations , the first was to remove the cancer and the second was to remove all my lymph nodes. The second operation has caused a large amount of fluid build up about the size of a tennis ball under my left arm and was wondering if any one else has had a similar thing and can some me any advise on how to minimise pain.

  • Thanks so much Sonya, I am seeing surgeon tomorrow, I was worried that it would explode or something, but just seems to be spreading into my back and yeah stings like hell where the scar is. Really appreciate your reply. My daughter found this website as I,m a bit of a technophobe. thank God for teenagers.

  • It sounds like you need it syringed off either by your surgeon or your breast care nurse. After my mastectomy I kept getting a seroma on my scar line and I had to have it drained twice a week for 5 weeks. It settled down after that. When it's all settled down for you then get an OT or a physio to show you how to do a gentle lymphatic massage- this will help in future.
