Radiation and Mepitel
I'm not yet finished chemo but trying to get my head around the radiation in 4 weeks. I have been told that I can use the Mepitel film at Royal Adelaide and at the last appointment I was given a piece to patch test for 24 hours which came out okay. The nurse there said that women who use it tend to do one of two things.
1. Leave it on (fixed up as needed) for the full time of treatment which in my case will be 3 weeks.
2. Leave it on during the week and have it removed for the weekend, reapplied each Monday before treatment resumes.
Just wondering if anyone has any advice or information about which they feel is the best method to follow. I'm guessing that the first allows complete protection of the area right throughout but the second allows some air (and washing) plus the opportunity to use the moisturisers.
@joeyliz What is common practice at your centre?

- SisterMemberI'm hoping that mine doesn't get too much worse. I just didn't expect it so long after but at least it explains why the area was so sore.Sign in to react to this post
- duxx1234Member@Sister I am two weeks finished radiation this Thursday. I’ve had blistering under my left armpit which has worsened. The redness and pain has increased along with tightness and pain in my left breast. I too thought it would be easier after finishing!Sign in to react to this post

- SisterMemberI realised this morning why my bras were hurting so much. Sometime in the last 24 hours, since yesterday's shower, my radiation burns have come out. Redness over the mastectomy site and very red and sore looking (and feeling) on my side under the arm. I was told that I could notice things up to 3 weeks after but I must admit that I thought it would show up earlier than this - it's been nearly 2 weeks since my last treatment.Sign in to react to this post
- NickstaMemberI am on my last two days of radiation. @Sister we will be doing our last day on the same day . Yippee !! How are you feeling?
Initially I had been told I would have radiation for 25 sessions @josephine66 , when I saw the radiation team to get measured up they said it was decided to have 16 plus a boost of 4. I asked why it was less than they had initially planned, and I was told they look at the individual, like the age and the general well being of the person. Not sure if that is right.
She said it was a shorter treatment as each session has a higher dose
I was told the mepitel can interfere as it stretches the breast so for me they said it was better not to use the mepitel. ( My breasts are a D Cup )
I am using moogoo udder cream and love it , I have solosite gel for the areas that have broken especially my nipple and where my incision was the nurses dress it each day wit a dressing that has the solosite on it ( only since the skin broke).
I cant stress enough to lather on whatever cream you decide to use and keep the skin moist. Ask them how far the radiation goes although your tatoos are the markers so you can start preparing your skin before you even start radiation.
I also use the Moogoo body wash for soap and it is great really gentle on your skin.
I thought it was good to air the skin at night but this is not the case for me they said I need to keep it moist so it does not dry out. I have to wear dressings at night and the last two days I have been able to sleep.
As a celebration to finish I am hoping to go skiing with my daughter for a few days. I am tired but I think the fresh air and change of scenery will be so good for us.Sign in to react to this post - SisterMemberI might add it on to my list of things to ask the rad onc today.Sign in to react to this post
- Josephine66MemberIm having 25 hits (no boosts). My rad onc said my treatment could have been higher dose over 15 hits like they do in UK however Australian research prefers the 25..or so he said anyway.Sign in to react to this post
