Neulasta

Hi everyone

I had 3 doses of neulasta which made my bones ache incredibly.  I have now been on tamoxifen for 12 months and have just found out I have osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Neither of which I  had before. Does anyone else have this as I think it might have been the neulasta.

Cheers

  • The latest information says it may reduce bone loss in post menopausal women. But this is different from bone strengthening.  And I guess the thing to note is the "may". I would discuss your results with your cancer specialist and be guided by their advice. I have osteopenia and that was prior starting an aramatose inhibitor. I only know about this as I was tested prior starting and don't know if it was at that point pre chemo.
  • The Tamoxifen is meant to strengthen the bones so I'm not sure how this is happening. Thats why I thought it may have been the Neulasta because of the way it works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. Does anyone else have similar who has used this?

    Thanks so much

  • As primek says, hormonal treatment blocks oestrogen and that affects bone density. My oncologist thinks I'll make 5 years (on Femara) without any significant damage, but my bone density was remarkably good for my age when I started. I am nearly 4 years on and the reduction is noticeable in tests but not having any obvious impact otherwise - no aching, no arthritis. I am doing some moderate work with weights at the gym as this may help, as will any weight bearing exercise. I was aware of this likely effect when I started treatment, so no surprise and I still think it's worth doing but information before you start treatment should be the norm.
  • The chemo and tamoxifen causes this as it stops the estrogen which helps us retain bone strength. Arthritis is common...sometimes we might not have had enough pain to know about it before. I had arthritis a little but it's more of an issue now on femera. Since losing some weight though it has improved. Kath
