Medication queries - Lyrica..... take or not to take

Hi Ladies,

As you may have read in my blog....nerve pain has come back to terrorise me!

the pain last night was awful.......it has kept me from getting a good night's sleep

I have a script for Lyrica....it sits unfilled in my draw....why? because my Dad took something from the same family of drugs (gabapentin)  for his nerve pain (Advanced Prostate cancer with bony mets) and I remember vivdlyhow he hated it.....he said it made him feel "out of himself" and "scary".......

So I'm turning to your experiences with this drug.....I know the effects are individual....but I have had so many bad side effects, including allergies,  from high end pain killers and the like that i am no terrified to take any new drug!

So help a fellow trooper out and please share.....I will of course discuss this further with my Dr as I now have a new neuropathy down the side of my knee....

I am thinking it's time to deal with this rotten nerve pain and your advice is appreciated.

Love and light to all

Tracy

xx

  • I took lyrica post surgery. Initially I was prescribed a sub therapeutic dose which was unhelpful. Once on the recommended dose the nerve pain settled down very quickly and after a few weeks I could cut it back. I did feel a bit sleepy...I was also on 2 lots of pain killers though also. Eventually it meant I could drop the level of pain killers and also then the dose of lyrica and then eventually was able to get off it.

Unlike pain killers for it to work you need to take it daily for it to work.

I guess you could try it and if after a couple of weeks you don't  like it effects (or no longer need it ) then you could stop.

Hope things settle soon. Kath x

  • Hi Tracy,

I have been on Lyrica for about 12 months for nerve pain, following knee surgery. I dont find it spaces me out, but I am only on 75mg, and to be honest find it only takes the edge of the pain and doesnt take it away altogether.

I would suggest talking to your GP about any medications queries, even to ask what are the effects of stopping if you do have a reaction to it, or if there is an alternative if Lyrica doesnt agree with you.

Either way, I hope you find some relief from your nerve pain.

    Hugs

  • Hi Tracy

I had Lyrica for a time....

I hated it like your dad it made me feel out in space so to speak.... but it did stop the nerve pain and I could sleep.

tell me where is your nerve pain happening ? how long since surgery?

As I have found some other more natural ways to deal with my pain...
