Low level laser for Lymphoedema

Has anyone tried low level laser for the treatment of Lymphoedema?  I had a lumpectomy on 10th July followed by an axcillary clearance on 25th July, 2013 (29 nodes removed only 1 with cancer).  I have had 3 does of AC and my right hand is really swollen.  My physio doesn't seem to think that it can be Lymphoedema this early (she thinks 3 months post surgery) but I am getting worried.  I have ordered some compression garments and hopefully these will help as well as the massages.  I have one more dose of AC (17th October) and then 12 weekly does of Taxol so I would like to think that I can get on top of the swelling before it gets worse.

  • My Lymphodema specialist physio has been using the laser on a hard area of seroma with some success. It is greatly reduced in size over a couple of months. She recommends the use of compression sleeve for a couple of hours a day to reduce the chance of Lymphodema developing in my arm. She also regularly measures the arm to check for early signs of a problem developing. I have had some increase in the fingers due to fluid retention, a side effect of some chemo drugs. Massage, exercise and drinking plenty of water are also important. Only wear the sleeve when you are active, walking is ideal. Hope this helps. Deanne xx
  • Hi Sally, I do not know if it is Lymphoedema or not, but I would still try the laser or ultrasound treatment. I believe it would do no harm & may even lessen the swelling. Take care Adrianne
